Buying a 12 volt digital TV

I bought one from JB Hi Fi a couple of years ago, it has a DVD player built in, and yes much cheaper than the caravan shop. The 12v ones come with a 240v adaptor so you get the best of both worlds.

It pays to shop around.

PS: Welcome to the forum

Hi I am  a new member who is thoroughly enjoying the company of the forum.  I finally have to replace the old 12 v analogue TV and doing the rounds I found that a 12 volt digital TV in the likes of Harvey Norman and the Good Guys are about half the price of 12 v. TV that are for sale in caravan accessory shops.  Am I missing something?

Just check if the store TVs have a 12V DC inlet, if they have then go for it.

Hi Geogen,

Welcome to the forum and what you are missing re the RV/Caravan shops is that the 12 Volt TV's they sell are designed to cope with the rigours of bumping around in a motorhome or Caravan.

It makes them that bit more expensive than the home based variety.

However

I have fitted a "Standard" Teac 32 Cm 240 Volt/ 12 Volt LED TV in my motorhome and have had no problems.

I did buy a regulated 12 volt supply when I run the TV directly from the 12 Volt battery.

The TV draws 5 Amps and I bought a regulated 12 Volt 5 amp regulator from Jaycar.

I was told by a TV tech that using the TV directly from the motorhome 12 Volt supply could overload the TV under certain conditions.

I have had the TV for over a year now with two trips from Brisbane to Melbourne and back with no problems.

Hope this helps.

Safe Travels

With Kogan you get what you pay for. Hubby thinks they are great because they are cheap - I don't share his opinion. We have bought three TVs from them. With one we had to purchase separate speakers becasue the sound was so awful.  The last one is so slow to start up you would think you are in a time warp back to the days when you had to wait for the valves to warm up.  My Kogan ereader touch screen works OK with every function except the page turning - it wants to turn back a page.  Kogan have not bothered to answer my last email to them - so much for good service.

This is the Kogan set I have - http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/19-led-tv-pvr-and-hd-tuner-kogan-elite-led19/ - Kogan have two lines, the old LCD sets and the more modern LED. The LED ones are a little more expensive but they have a better picture and more importantly, consume less power.

Hi. We bought a Vivo on special this week at Australia Post. Research says they are made by LG. I have only just peeked in the box - and although it doesn't say 12V on the outside, there is a 12v plug attachment included. It is LED LCD HD with inbuilt DVD player and only cost $179. We're hoping it will do the job.

That seems like a good deal, what size screen is it NeilnRuth? If it has a 12v plug attachment I think it's a safe bet that it'll be ok on 12v

We have a 19inch Grundig 240/12v bought from HN's.It has a DVD built in. We looked at lots of TV's and this one was suitable for mobile homes and boats. We (meaning me as I am responsible for the inside packup!!)left it sitting on the bench on one of our moves( it normally travels on the bed) Got to our morning tea stop and it was on the floor.OOPs picked it up and it rattled and we very nearly binned it there and then but that night we were in a town so plugged it in and it stilled worked!! And now 2 years on it is stilling working fine and it still has the rattle so whatever broke wasn't too important.

They may have an LG screen, Korean (used to be Goldstar ie Lucky Goldstar), but they're made by a company called Natcomp Chinese.

The Vivo is 18.5" and it looks like it is made for 12v as the cord for 240v has the adaptor. Working on 240v it is looking great. I note that Aldi's catalogue says they have a Brauhn for $179 (21.5") for sale on Sat April 14th. Also have a bracket. Will check that out as it is less than online prices.

Hi All, I recently bought a Kogan TV/DVD combo and whilst it works great when connected to my house aerial, in the motorhome I get almost nothing. Channel 2,1,10 & 11 is about it. I have auto scanned and re-scanned and the only consistent channel seems to be channel 2. I have a Winegard antenna and have just replaced the cable but it's made no difference. Recently I stayed in a caravan park and connected the Kogan directly to their antenna point and got absolutely nothing when they were getting all the regular Adelaide stations. I have had a Sanyo and an AWA both working well on all stations in the motorhome with the same antenna, cables, location etc. If anyone has any ideas or input, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Tv's airnt all they seem. They all look very simular on the outside but its the inside that counts. Your problem will be in the quality of the tuner and insulation from stray signals. Back in he bad old days tv's had high quality tuners and lots of insulation against straysignals because it didnt matter where you live reception was never high quality. Modern tv's are made for high population areas and not for fringe reception areas which is why you can get some tv's to work in the MH and not others, some tuners are better than others. It will do no good to return it to a service centre as it will work 100% as you know from running it inside.

cheers
