parks v free camping

I was amazed to read in the nomad times that wagga council is thinking of closing the free camp areas as are other councils.

We shop in those towns use their laundromat, snack bars,  suoermarkets pubs.etc   caravan parks are not the only business in towns to be considered.

I am sure other solos have come across the thing of having to pay for two people.

'oh we don't have a single rate'        Well with so many solo travelers maybe they need to get a single rate.

I ask at the office and if there is no single rate I don't stay.

I was recently quoted $80 for a night on an unpowered sight........now that is steep even for two people.

I know they have rates etc to pay so how about structuring their business to cope with modern trends.  Many people travel alone these days.

I have to say I don't like parks one bit and prefer not to use them.  But I know other women who don't feel safe free camping.

Yes, it's very annoying to have to pay the double rate. I'd prefer them to state a per person rate. There's a few out there, but not enough. I can't afford to pay CP fees anyway.

I don't worry about travelling on my own anymore. I used to a little bit, but I figure I'm not staying home just because I don't have a man to hold my hand, and I could get hit by a bus tomorrow anyway.

But I wouldn't free camp somewhere alone.

I've found there's usually other campers around and they seem to take you under their wing when they realise you're alone.

I will only ever use a Park if I need 240v power.  Much prefer to Free-camp.

Cheers,

Sheba.

hey girls i have to agree with you, with the 2 person rate, it stinks, it ends to be a a pretty exy shower, i know at one stage the caravan park association tried to get calliopie qld rest area closed down but failed thank god, but you will find most country towns now are realising the $$$$ spent by the travell helps the local comunity, and provides good facilities for a minor donation, when i'm travelling i call into the local pub and ask the person pulling the bear if there is a place to roll the swag out i don't know how you feel about state forrest camp grounds most have water septic toilets [queensland that is] most are easy access by conventonal vehicles towing vans i myself when i travel use them, most are abit out of the way so i stay for a couple of days but i'm a bloke and the scrub suites me to a tee $5.30 a night and there are some absolute corkers in queensland.

Yes, the National Parks and Forests are great camps too. Anything free or under $10 is my idea of a good camp.

And welcome to the site Darrell. I see you're on the Sunshine Coast. Check out the thread in Get Togethers for a meet in May at Cobb & Co Nine Mile Campground at Tandur.

Welcome to the Grey Nomad circus Zues. I hope you enjoy your stay.
$80 a night! Where the heck was that Dawa?
We need to know the parks to avoid, as well as the parks to frequent, especialy if they take solo-dom into account.
I often get consideration as a single traveller in parks. When they look for the offsider I tell them there isn't one, they often knock off a couple of bucks. You'll never get half price, and I do understand that.
A single will use the same amount of power as a couple, but we use less water and amenities. So having a couple of bucks knocked off the price is always good.
I don't get around with "solo" around my neck like a millstone. It's just my circumstances and I get on with life anyway.
I make up my mind to do something and I find a way to make it happen.

I don't use their flamin power.

I have an unpowered campsite always.

Having an inverter means my solar is sufficient.

Anyway I have the choice to stay away and if there is no free camping then I go on to the next place where there is and use the shopping facilities, laundromat there.

$80 for one night on a unpowered sight. RIP OFF. I like to help CV parks and use them when I can as too many of them are closing down but $80 is way over the top. I think CV parks need to look at themselves too and THINK. I agree with a solo price as well, even it if is only the cost of an extra person being taken of the cost of the site. Every little bit helps.

If any business isn't profitable then it closes.

If CV parks don't get with the times weeeeell.

you can't tell me that a piece of grass for the night is worth $80 even if it is on the beach.

Even if I had the money i wouldn't invest in a caravan park. Think of the management problems and overheads and the increasing regulation and insurance.

I am not defending high prices, but if caravan parks were gold mines there would be a lot more of them around. As well, local residents and other accommodation providers would prefer to see caravan and camping parks gone and lobby for more restrictions on them.

Strangely enough we as a community are directly and indirectly responsible for many of those blow-outs in costs and excessive regulation, especially over recent years.

Here is hoping for more solo rates though.

Surely I would have to be a big Four...I mean those people are way over the Top.....I know their staff are only workers who have no idea about the cost of travell and really don't care a rats....But $ 80 gee I wish to know  where this is

A few years ago we were travelling to Port Stevens in NSW and were quoted $78 a night for a powered site, as you can imagine we were shocked and did not stay. Have a wedding in Torquay vic this weekend so thought we would take the van down, just noted their rates are $68 peak season, $33 at present. Hotels start at over $200 a night. Ouch Glenda

travel in australia is so expensive. Can't see how those sorts of prices are justified ever.

I am staying at Ulladulla and am getting a single rate for an unpowered site, i am using my lappy as i type plugged into camp kitchen and having a glass of red looking out into the harbour. The single rate is not advertised.

I do stay at nat parks occasionally, they have a single rate. State forests are free. Just had a week at blackheath caravan park and they have put their prices up big time. Probably my last visit there.

Had two months for free in Meroo National Park in DEC/JAN. very good spot, but very crowded. go their in off peak (and make sure not a canberra holiday) too many rednecks going.
