Ambulance Cover

Our private coverage with MBF has been taken over by BUPA, which made me call to check out our coverage.

The question came up regarding ambulance cover.  As we are traveling full time, not in our home state, we really do not have very good coverage.  We are limited as to which ambulance company we can call to get paid.

Question:  Can we get special coverage for full time caravaners?

Note:  We are aged pensioners

Thank you for your advise

As far as I understand it ambulance care is free to pensioners. If you ever get a bill send them your pension details.
Surely this would be Australia-wide?

Thank you....we  are new at being pensioners and did not know it was covered.  It looks like we can get ride of the extra cover with BUPA.

I will be travelling as a non pensioner so it will be interesting to see what my health entitlements are. They will have trouble catching up with me to give me the bill however if i ever need an ambulance.

Elle, if you dont have any private health insurance, check out what "ambulance only" cover might cost. I had ambulance only cover for quite a long time, it was only about $20 a year and well worth the peace of mind.

In S.A. even though you are a pensioner you don't get free ambulance cover you have to pay for your ambulance coverage so make sure you check things out very carefully. Helena.

Elle, check with your local ambulance people. You can get ambulance cover thru your local subcentre. Can't remember what we pay thru Lancelin but it is quite cheap.

It seems every state has a different policy. In Qld it is covered with registration, pensioners included.
In SA you pay a membership to the St. John Ambulance usually at a pharmacy or local office.
In WA you can have ambulance membership or private health, but you can't have both.
I'm not sure about NSW, Vic, NT or Tassie.
I do know if you're covered in your home state, you are covered nationally. Just like RAC membership.
Check for local information.

Check the following site --- take note of the 'emergency service' as compared to 'non emergency'.
The system should be standard throughout the country.

Yes Milo. You're covered if that's what your policy says.
I have extras, covering everything but GP and elective surgery. As a public patient pensioner, if the problem is urgent and critical, I'll get help anyway. But dental, physio and other ancillary services are covered, and are of more value to me.
