 Hi milo,.

I use the basic Windows tools every couple of months, right click on the C Drive in My Computer then select Properties followed by Tools and use those options.

As well as using Tools I would also go through your installed programs via Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and remove those programs not in use.

Just basic stuff that I use, there are many free programs but they usually come with strings attached and I get down to basics.

 Sorry GS, I thought I was on a tech site (I'm a DH)

SSD is Solid State Drive, have one in my new desktop system, they do not spin round hence the need NOT to defrag.

have a look here, they are not cheap but the price has to come down soon, I hope, they are very fast.

Just reading your notes about the C drive cleanup.
I can tell you the advice given to you about CCleaner is spot on.

With many years experience in the computer business
building, supplying & repairing systems locally & online all over the
world -  I can tell you I run these programs daily...
 
Especially before and after logging into banking or financial web sites. 
I never have any issues with systems of mine or my customers nor
have any been compromised ....the information just isnt there.
 
These programs cleanup, unwanted cookies and temp files, which slow
your computer down as time goes by, They are easy and simple to use
So the advice is spot on.

Also you need to note a few common faults within ALL Windows OS itself
Windows comes with errors right from the start.. especially within the
Internet Explorer which is called a "browser" Then users install Tool Bars
which are really spys (sending your information over the net) which makes the whole matter worse. If they were needed of course then they would have been intalled with Windows

This is not really the place to list all the changes out for you however if you are interested, I am happy to email some simple instructions how
to change them in your browser to be safer or remove the spys etc.

Anyway just a few thoughts which might help.

Yes - Im fairly new to this site & didnt want to upset any one or the site regulations etc  by pouring info into this site as you say, Many may not understand some of these anyway 

As you can appreciate changes depend on wnat OS you use & what version of browser etc. Basically as more experienced people know - Windows has alot of registry errors when installed which can cause many users problems if unaware. The use of CCleaner is a very good start for inexperienced users to maintain their machine and clean many of these up. That goes without saying that a good antivirus and antispy is also a must.

So I think the best thing is that I email via (Priv Email) some simpe steps with Screen catches of these instructions per OS so that the site caretakers can use this in short bursts for those that may need assistance.

This is how I setup all systems old and new right from the start. What do you think? Im looking forward to getting back on the road in the early new year for a few months and seeing this great country again.
