The Good, The Bad & The Near Ugly!!

The Good - this morning we had a delightful morning tea with Gerty Dancer and her hubby - what a lovely lovely couple and made us feel so very welcome. Thank you both for a wonderful morning.

The Bad - yesterday afternoon, 'The Beast' kinda 'died' when our DinL borrowed it to take their rather large pooch to the vets. However, the services of RACQ, NRMA and the Tuggeranong Auto Electrician were all second to none - the service provided just days out from Christmas was great, a rental vehicle was made available for our use and 'The Beast' was back with us in under 24 hrs! It was the starter motor that decided it didn't want to 'play' anymore - thankfully we had finished our travelling (so to speak) having arrived in Canberra last Sunday, so we really weren't 'caught' anywhere.

The Near Ugly???? Well, had they put in a ridgy-didge Nissan part, we would have been down the gurgler by some $1700, however, a 'generic' (?) part was used and the people from the extended warranty mob, came to the party and we only had to pay around $200. Ah .... there is a Santa after all!!!

All is right with our world again for Christmas. Again, we have to thank Gerty Dancer and hubby for a wonderful morning, and Merry Christmas to you both.

makes you wonder why there is such a large difference in parts prices. I could understand a few hundred dollars but $1500 is insane.

Yes- a toyota starter is $900, and a chinese copy $178. It even has the same markings on it! Still going after 2 years. Its all dealer mark up. Some one said that a commodore made of genuine parts would cost $250000! Mind boggling, isn,t it.Bill

Oops, obviously didn't come out right - the 'generic' part was around $1000, but the warranty mob came to the party for around $750, and we paid the balance. Sorry folks!

We enjoyed meeting you too Pejay, glad to hear your "Beast" is back in action, and at a better than expected price!

Merry Christmas to you both and your family.

$700 is still a big difference in price - getting close to double. Glad everything turned out so well. And lucky you weren't somewhere remote when it happened.

Hi Pejay,

Sorry I had to leave and miss you. Maybe you will still be around and we can catch up when I get home.

Sorry to hear about "the beast" Good on NRMA etc. Good outcome overall for what could have been a difficult situation.

Have a Merry Christmas.

bill, I had an old Toyota and the petrol pump went, genuine part was $1200, I asked if they expected me to put weels on it and drive it as it cost more than I paid for the car. Ended up paying $25.00 for a second hand one.

This discrepancy in price is related to the GST The govt do not care what they charge as long as hey get their bloody GST Thanks again Meg and Mr Howard

Ps Remember the ACCC are a Govt dept........Makes sense, don't it? It hurts my feeling that they think we are stupid people and don't know whats going on.....

Jimbo the discrepancy in price has nothing whatsoever to do with the GST, nor the government. It is partly a matter of costs - the genuine item has all the layers of the R&D and the big company behind it, the 'generic' could be a one man show in a garage knocking together copies. It could be a matter of quality - you have some comeback if the genuine article fails, quite likely none if your generic turns out to be a dud. And partly marketing - those of us whose mechanical knowledge extends to finding the hole to put the diesel in generally feel more comfortable with a name brand. And I would have thought the existence of the differing prices and products shows that the ACCC is doing its job well - lots of competition out there.
