If you have just reinstalled windows I would format the drive and start again, you have little to lose in the programming because it would have been wiped out previously.

I would pay very close attention to the instruction screen when deciding actually which drive to reinstall windows on, paying careful attention to any partitions that may be already there and making sure that the previous installation was properly removed by formatting.

The problem outlined suggests a major installation problem and would be better totally removed by formatting. I would also make sure that the product key is properly inserted.

The new computers now rarely come with the installation CD and that information has to be downloaded from the manufacturer's site and burned onto a CD.

Was it an original orsomething you bought off someone else. Bill Gates has eyes everywhere, and when you use windows update, it downloads your configuration as you use it. They try to stop you using pirate products, and if you ask them they will try to charge you to fix the problem that they started.Microsoft has a lot to answer for. Bill

my money is on a faulty memory chip, pull them out and reseat them, try different slots. Over the years I have seen countless times were a faulty memory stick has corrupted a fresh install. I used to build and sell computers when there was a bit of money in it but that went west when department stores started selling them and their customers wanting free product support from small indepentant sellers that offered service. This sort of problem is designed to make you tear your hair out milo, stick with it.

i talked with hardley normals (harvey norman) today and they said bring it in as could be a hard drive
failure happening ,so ill take it down during the week when the tech guys are there,
at least i have my laptop ..

Back in the good old days, when you installed Windows you had to phone up to activate your installation. While you were on the phone they asked you for your key, then fed that into their system which produces another. You then had to type that one in as well. These days with online activation that new code is fed down the line and inserted for you. It is that new code you need to continue if you don't wish to ring up.

To activate your Win 7 you ring up M$ and tell them what went on and quote your original code to them.

For those who wish to know their current activation code you can retrieve it with Belarc Advisor. Go to http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and download the programme. Follow the procedure in "Download Tips" to install and run it. There is a good FAQ on that page about the programme.

When you have run Belarc, use the options in the file menu of your browser to print out a copy of the results and also copy it to a file for further reference.

Under the heading "Manage all your software licenses..." you will find the software licence numbers for all your programmes that need and have them. The activation codes of M$ programmes are there as well. It will also tell you about the hardware in your computer, peripherals attached at the time of taking the scan and what programmes you have installed. I recommend everyone with a Windows computer install the programme and make a scan periodically.
