Ken, Myrtle is a hiace, not a coaster.
Other than the age I don't think they have much in common, unless he has bought a dud too. Sorry Myrtle, you are much healthier now. I take that back, you are not a dud, anymore.

Mine is a 1983 2b dony Diesal gors well.....Have a damn good look at thr erust area's around the awning..I'v had too spend a heap of time at this.......It's a forever job...Sorry I can't be more positive for you

I have a 1983 Toyoya Coaster Love it......Look out for the rust around the awning area 2b donk Diesel Very Harsh on fuel at these prices..............There is a lot of rust so you will have to be very careful I was Ripped off Because I was in too much of a Hurry....Wish I could be more positive

I used to own a Hiace campervan many years ago. Excellent vehicle and I had lots of trips away in Betsy until her sad demise. The bus isn't exactly a dud but I have got a LOT of work to do on it. No name for her as yet. We have simply called her "the bus"

We got "caught" a little bit but at $5500 I new I had lots of work to do. Still when you are on a very tight budget as we are the cheap base price gives us lots more money to spend on getting it how we want it. It has a Ford 6cyl petrol/gas engine. The gas bottle is enormous and is under the bed area so that will have to go. We will be reconditioning the motor and leave it as petrol only. We don't have an awning as yet. The conversion that was done was an "unfinished project" as they say. Will be taking 3 years to finish and then we hit the road.

Sounds like you have a big job ahead of you Doug and Sue.
Myrtle cost a base price of $5500 too and so far that has blown out to $12,000 not counting all the wonderful volunteer man hours so generously offered and accepted with gratitude just to get Myrtle rolling again.
I wish you luck, all the best over the next 3 years.

I am looking forward to seeing the famous"Mrtyle" on the road in the future .I have sold my soul and bought a mazda diesel(ford)and a freeway slide on, so I get a vehicle for my business, and one to travel in. The hilux is probably going to end up as parts, which is a bit sad after all the miles I did in her.Ah, well , you have to move on.The mazda is great and more comfortable than the hilux , and better on fuel. The slideon is vastly better than my home made "baitbox", and I can,t wait til I am on the road , again. Hope to see you there, Bill

We bought a 1987 Coaster LWB 2.5 years ago and just love it ! It has the 6 cylinder 2H Diesel engine, power steer and exhaust brake (which is fantastic).This year we have spent 2 lots of 3 months travelling the east coast from Melbourne to the Daintree and the Coaster was great. We find it excellent for just pulling up overnight and free camping without attracting too much attention. It has shower/toilet,hot water,microwave and we can stay out in the bush for around 6-7 days with the solar plus generator. All in all, we just find it fantastic !!

Nice looking rig! Ours had been converted (sort of....lol) and has been fitted with a 6 cyl Ford petrol/gas motor. We don't like the gas (there is a huge gas cylinder under the bed area...kinda scary) and so will be taking it out. The motor needs reconditioning and we can't decide whether to stick with the petrol or try and get a diesel. Cost is a major factor in this decision as I believe we will have to buy a used diesel engine to get reconditioned. May have to stay with the petrol. One of those catch 22 damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. We will be stripping the inside bare and re-doing it all. Fortunately it only cost us $5500 so we reckon we can spend about $40000 on it and still be way ahead. Have you done anything to yours or was it "as is" when you bought it?

We bought "as is", however have added stuff like Satellite TV,new tyres,new bedding etc. I had the small mount of rust fixed and now have it checked every 12 months. We were very lucky as ours had never been a "bus" as such, and was owned by a Govt. Depatment from new, with the conversion done in 1995.It has still only done 170,000klms., so hopefully still plenty of life left in it yet!

Hi there.. we bought our coaster 6mths ago and it was an unfinished project.. hubby is a heavy duty mechanic and he is so very pleased with the bus... he's fitted it out with solar to be as self sufficient as possible... the motor is 3b diesel... the bus is a short based one... we've taken it for day trips and it sits real nice on the road... we cant wait to live in it!!!! Have fun with yours :)
