I just had a phone call from 'Windows'. I didn't believe it for a minute and asked if I could call him back as I was busy. He gave me this phone number...0280054980. I googled it and found a few references to it. Even a 'help 4 windows' web site.
Is there any use reporting it? Will anything be done? Or is it just a waste of time?
We advertised our tinny in our local paper - got a text to buy it, to reply using e-mail only - right or wrong, would pay via paypal - was a scam, thankfully we don't use internet banking or for that matter don't buy anything that requires paypal. Did report it to Paypal though - heard nothing back. You have got to be so careful, don't you?

Hey Beth - you can have a lot of fun with those calls, keep them stringing along. Their strategy is to persuade you to allow them remote access to your hard drive thus accessing all your saved passwords and key strokes. There are competitions around how long you can keep egging them on. After my first call I had quite a good time egging them on. They are probably the new century version of Jehova Witnesses or similar. First there were fairies, leprechauns and elves, then UFO's and alien abductions, now is the era of cyber scammers.

IMHO I would consider that unwise and that the best stragegy is to hang up immediately you suspect something is not "kosher"
The following Australian Government sites cover the issues of scams and safety on line...
I consider the Scamwatch site a "must-read" for all regular users of the internet.
I'm registered with the Stay Smart Online site and they send out email updates of matters such as software updates, current scams, and a regular e-newsletter.

Yes you do pejay, you dont know who to trust any more, what a terrible world we live in. Neil
maybe if you had an old computer you could fill it with viruses. Then say you were so glad someone from windows finally contacted them to help. and let them have access. Or would that be too nasty ?

I usually sting them along and tell them 'You have just rang the ambulance/fire service. Where's the fire? Where do you want the ambulance to go?'
Another one is:'I am a thief and just broke into this house when the phone rang'
