Wooleybah Sawmill - Pillaga Forest NSW

Gday...

Wooleybah Sawmill has recently been afforded Heritage Significance. The mill and settlement is about 45km northwest of Baradine in the Pilliga scrub.

It is a rare surviving and intact example of a bush sawmill and settlement dating from the 1930s. The Sawmill had been a major source of employment for the local Aboriginal community from the 1930s until the closure of the mill in the late 1990s.

Cheers

John

Gday...

I know exactly what ya mean ..... this is what I wrote in my journal when I got back to the van that night -

Walking around the old sawmill settlement was captivating. The air was still the atmosphere quiet and despite the silence, I really could hear the shrill cry of sawmill blades, the bustle of mill-workers, and the chatter of people living their lives in the old cottages.

Cheers

John

Gday...

Nah .... no Yowies unfortunately. I was very impressed that the area was being ignored by everybody. I spent four days in the area - was the only one in Baradine van park and the only visitor at any of the sites when I visited - and the weather was wonderful.

Cheers

John
