Help needed please, suggestions for January on the south coast NSW

Hi all, I am now at my cousins place in Burra NSW. They have a camper van and are looking for suggestions of somewhere they could go in January (free camp) or a park that has a little space between vans and a bit of character. They have three children who love to swim, walk and explore. Near a beach would be good but I understand being in school holidays it's difficult. Most of the spots I mentioned that I have been seem to be very busy now days. My days of camping down that way were many years back now. Would appreciate any input please. I have the camps 6 book but have not used any of the spots myself yet. Thanks in anticipation. Tess

I really loved Eden. The park was nice, a short walk to the beach and other walking opportunities.

Tathra Beach Tourist Park is very nice and very Family Friendly you get an added bonus if you like Frankie J Holden as in, he and his wife own the palce so if they are there could turn out to be a very good time for kids of all ages and big kids as well.

When I lived at Tathra (10 year ago), it was always packed out during the school holidays. Might be worth it though, a lot of families go there year after year. Its a beautiful spot, nowadays we go there most years as soon as the holidays are over. Edens lovely too, but the same applies.

Perhaps you could consider the mountains? We camped at Tom Groggins on the headwaters of the Murray river, and there was hardly anybody there.

Edit... sorry, the Tom Groggins camp was after the school hols too.

You could try the North Head Camp Ground at Moruya.

It's not free but it's cheap $10pn if you are on a pension otherwise I think from memory that it's $11 or something similar.

There is no power but there are flush loos as well as long drops, cold showers behind the flush loos and a tank for drinking water.

You can also buy your firewood on site (provided there isn't a fire ban of course)

Its up and over the sand dune onto the beach or over the road to the river.

You can also do some great fishing from the breakwall, off the beach or in the river.

There are markets every Saturday in Moruya and it's a nice little town with everything that you need there.

We spend a lot of time there when we are home.  It does get pretty busy in the school holidays but a lot of people come and go so you could get lucky.

It's  on the road to the airport and is actually opposite the airport but that isn't a problem as there are only 4 commercial flights per day and the last one is 8pm.  The first one is 7.30am and they are only small commuters so there isn't very much noise.

The south coast is just magic, during the summer. We are heading that way, hopefully late January / early Feb.

Try Congo beach just south of Moruya. Not free, but right on the beach. Also Dalmeny, just prior to Narooma again a charge, but the beach is just there. Just south of Narooma have a look at Mystery Bay. Another great spot for the beach, and although you cannot camp there, go into the Eurobedella Nation Park, entry just down from Mystery Bay. There are some fantastic beaches, as in Pooles beach, and I think it is called 1870 beach.

Bermagui, there are some incredible spots around there too, and some magic beaches, especially as you go towards Tathra.

However all these places are going to be chockers with the school holiday crowds.

Hope that helps

Cheers & beers

We were at Dalmeny about 7 months ago and it was $10 per night and includes all amenities.

Also checked out Mystery Bay and that was $11pn and only log drop loos. If you are relying on solar panels Mystery Bay could present a problem (that's why we didn't go there) in that it is heavily "forested" and getting enough sunlight could be the thing.
