Got this notice from my vet supplies place and thought there may be others who are not aware of this Qld law.
Police are cracking down on unrestrained pets in cars. Vet Products Direct would like to inform our valued customers of the laws regarding unrestrained animals in vehicles in Qld.
Many of you may be unaware that there is a $200 fine for having an unsecured pet in your vehicle. There is also an additional fine of $233 for driving with a pet on your lap.
Aside from the animal being a distraction whilst the owner is driving, there is a significant risk to both the pet and the other occupants of a vehicle in the event of an accident, if an animal is unrestrained in the car.
The best way to protect yourself and your pet from an unfortunate mishap such as this is to ensure that your pet is in a suitable restraint such as a harness or carry cage.
My dogs always have their harness when in the car. It's great because you can clip on the lead immediately when you all leave the car - excellent for caravan parks or for when you are letting them out for a pit stop at an unknown place.
The cargo barrier is fine. The dog needs to be restrained as, in the event of an accident the dog can become a "missile" if it flies through the front window. They can be cliped to the seat belt fitting with a short lead, you can buy these things at KMart etc. The cage is OK as well, I don't know if they have to be anchored as with a baby capsule because in theory the cage could also "fly through the window" as well. Either way the dogs must be restrained in the vehicle. Cheers Allara
