I'd like to put my hand up to attend the Qld Meet in 2012....however it is too far off for me at this point.....but I will keep watching this space.

I personally think it should be a 'free' campsite as opposed to a paid one or at least a very cheap or donation only.

You do need to keep in mind that June is a very popular time in Qld and many places will be chockers with southern nomads.

I personally think Aprilish would be a better time.....before the southern influx....just my personal opinion though.

I am in and agree that it needs to be a free campsite.
Won't be in if it's April as won't be up there yet.
I also think Atherton Tablelands may be too high in the state for some.

I've been thinking about this while I've been at the Cooloola Coast.

I'd suggest Central Qld somewhere, only it'll be getting pretty cold for we Qlders by then. It'd be warmer on the coast. What about Inskip Point? Out of school holidays, of course. I'd suggest MV Sarawak campground, as it's suitable for larger groups and 2WDs. Well shaded and sheltered and not far back to Rainbow Beach for supplies, bakery, etc.

Just had a quick look at the webste. Looks great.
Two things.. 1. Permts. How can this be arranged so no one misses out?
2. Not suitable for busses. What is the issue here?

Permits can be purchase online or you can collect them at the QPWS office in Rainbow Beach.

Permits MUST be obtained BEFORE you go to the campground.

It is sandy and there are a number of trees in the area......I would have difficulty getting my caravan in there.

Not sure if there are toilets at that campground.....I was at Inskip (not that particular area) last year but cannot remember about the toilets in that particular area.

EDIT: Just looked at the map and yes there are toilets down by the second access point....no showers and water only available back in Rainbow Beach about 15 - 20 klms. Dump point is also at the same location as the water.

Height and manoeuvrability were my issues. How high are you CC?

I like Inskip but think somewhere with wide open spaces would be more suitable at that time of year......again just my opinion.

There are many possies that are accessible, and as I said, it's mostly 2WD. Although sandy, there's a lot of ground cover.

Anyway, just a suggestion. I was going to suggest Lake Broadwater Conservation park, but no dogs are allowed.

I think it has to be someplace everyone can get to with big rigs, small rigs, buses etc. etc. so not too restricted on access and site size / slope.

I'm not sure about the gravel roads but I should think they need to be in reasonable condition and not akin to 4 WD tracks- while they wouldn't put me off, I wouldn't want everything in the van bounced around like a tumble dryer.

Personally, i would prefer to avoid the sandy / muddy / boggy places.

Where ever we choose, it needs to suit the largest number to nomads (and the largest range of experience )

Although I'm a Qlder, I'm relatively new to camp spots, so I'll pass the batten to some of you more travelled nomads.

My choice would be the Capricorn area, being warmer.

Also 2WD accessible, a good gravel road is okay, shade, and water to look at, ie: river, dam, weir, or lake.

Oh, and free or low cost.

Just some food for thought! I really don't care where it is but feel that the very nature of our forum "nomads" make most discussion of distance irrellevant. It doesnt matter where it is it will be a longway from somewhere, in fact a long way from a lot of somewheres. I think if you try to please eveyone nothing will happen so maybe someone with knowledge of the area can nominate a place that fills as much of the requested criteria as plausible (remember the more criteria one applies the less places will suit) and nominate it as the place and those who it suits will be there. Those that it doesn't can maybe organise another elsewhere. The more get togethers the better and the more chance of members attending as we will never find a spot and time suitable for all. Just as a thought what about the sunshine coast area?

I don't know of anywhere else, other than those I've mentioned, that are low cost or free.

I've just been looking back through old posts on Free/Budget campsites and found Kin Kin Qld.

I drove through there on my way back from Cooloola yesterday, and I reckon that could be a top spot for our meet. It's really nice area and central to lots of places to visit.

Two possible suggestions are CAW6 #623 Oakey Creek Reserve or CAW6 #745 Leyburn.

Both have huge open areas to park any size rig and both have toilets and both are on creeks.

Leyburn has water and a small shop just across the creek and showers are available up behind the tennis courts for a gold coin fee, fee payable at the local shop. There is also a pub and all within walking distance.

Oakey Creek Res is a short distance from the small township of Bowenville.

Both are free, both are on sealed roads, both are also pet friendly and both allow campfires.

Not a lot of shade at either but in winter I doubt many will be requiring too much shade, especially for anyone with solar panels.

You'd probably get as many as 50 rigs into either place.

Found it myself. Oakey Creek Reserve is 620 in Camps 5.
Leyburn is still 745 in Camps 5.

Another two options which attract a small fee.currently $5 per person per night are:

James Sharpe Park/Riverbend Campground at Canungra (these are both sides of the creek here, hence the different names) with toilets, water, on a creek, campfires allowed and pet friendly. This is in the Gold Coast hinterland and is CAW6 #703

Andrew Drynan Park.currently $5 per person per night with toilets, water, on a creek, campfires allowed and pet friendly. This is on the old Lions Road about 18 klms out of Rathdowney south west of Beaudesert. CAW6 # 708

Again neither has huge amounts of shade but both can accommodate a good number of rigs and have wide open spaces. Both have the option to purchase firewood from the ranger and both are on sealed roads.

Give me a bit more time and I will see what else I can come up with.
