Dunco....when I purchased a new HD for the house it would only pick up a few digital stations and I nneded to then replace the aeriel with a digital version and then I received all of them...

There is no such thing as a digital antenna. All an antenna does is pick up electrical waves. It does not matter what the type of modulation is on the signals is. It is the receiver that determines whether it can decode the signal.

You may have needed a better type of cable. The old single screened cable is leaky and will pick up all sorts of electrical interference that is generated within your house. The old cable would have needed to be replaced with quad shielded cable to suppress that interference. When this is done it may be advantageous to replace an old antenna.

The problem is that some of these shonks of supposed antenna specialists con the punters into replacing perfectly good antennas. The yaffle their customers with eroneous terms like "digital antennas." If your old antenna produced a good analogue signal, it should have been able to provide a good digital signal.
