Rear View Camera.

O.K.  What am I doing wrong ?   Camera /Mirror system was working fine till  I accidently put 12v on the earth wires.

This was not in the vehicle, I had been trying out something with my 12v tv and bang No TV no Camera.

Actualy my mirror/monitor was not hooked up in the set up.   I had a spare camera and fitted this back on the van.    Result.     Power on Mirror/ Monitor (Blue Screen)   no signal (Picture)

Thought well its about time I had a new camera and mirror.

Received the new set up today.  Hooked it all up, Mirror/Monitor  no signal  (Blue Screen)

Tested all the leads and we have 12v  at every connection   !!!!!!!

Any Ideas !

Mike

REV CAMERA.JPGPictures of what we are refering to tend to make it a lot easier. Pic of a typical rev camara & small monitor. The 2 red conectors are the 12V feeds & the 2 Yellow conectors are the video feed. The power feeds are the only ones that should have 12V on them, definitly not the video feeds.

Yes  connected correctly. And many thanks for the Picture

Video (yellow plugs) connected  OK

12volt leads  connected and 12v  checked with multimetre. Power to Monitor is ok as it is switching on and off  but not getting a signal from the camera's. I have tried  3 cameras on the new one now  ?  Power to Camera is OK.

I have tried the new leads supplied with the new unit.   And all my old leads as well and no issues with continuity evident in any those.

Never had this problem with previous set ups.

Cant understand why my Old Monitor/Mirror was working perfectly.    Then not working with a good spare camera.   Even tried another working camera on it.      My demise with the TV and the camera was done in the house.   The monitor was still in the car and not involved with the disasterous experiment

We are off to an Avan meet up at Bremmer Bay tomorrow.  I will talk to people down there and hopefully find the problem.

Regards

Mike

It is possible that your new camera is faulty

I have just installed a reverse camera, and , while it has a picture, I don,t think I could park with it . It works fine, but its hard for me to visualise where the corners of the vehicle are. I think a new pair of mirrors will help, and, perhaps, I will get used to the camera.Another toy to play with. Bill

Bill, on trucks that I've driven with reversing cameras in them we used to put three lines of very thin tape on the screen, first one on the ground behind your vehicle lay something, (eg 4x2 or similar) on the ground to mark the closest point that you would want to get to something when reversing, mark this on the screen.

The next one put the 4x2 on the ground at one corner of the vehicle and run it out the back in line with the edge of the vehicle, mark this on the screen and then do the same on the other side.

With these you can clearly see if anything is in the path of the reversing vehicle and where to stop before hitting anything.

Before doing this ensure the camera is fixed solid, if it moves the lines will be out...

 Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

After much testing and ideas from other people ! !

By chance I tried  the 12 v (cigarette plug) lead  from the new TV to power the camera's.

We have a picture at last.

It was the plugs on the  (test) 12v power leads.

Would you believe  that,  I had used  (for testing)  three 12v (cigarette plug)  leads that had faulty plugs at the camera  connection end.   They were not making a connection to any of the camera's,  positive pins  , in the plug.

All is well now.  As I had some spare  plugs I bought from Jaycar a while back for another job.      I  replaced  the faulty ones.  Good connection now.

Not related to the problem, but out of interest. I picked up this reversing camera from Ebay to use in conjunction with my Navman MY75T as a monitor. After replacing the AV connector on the camera adaptor lead to one of the correct size I connected the camera and applied 12V to the cam via a switch. At first the picture was visible and very clear, but taking into consideration that the cam was fitted with a fisheye lense, the picture was somehow still very distorted and I couldn't understand why it just looked wrong. It wasn't till my wife walked behind the vehicle that I realised the picture was actually upside down! Because the housing was angled, and designed to be mounted high on the vehicle to give a top down aspect, the only way to correct the problem was to open the camera housing and rotate the tiny camera board 180deg. Luckily this was a simple task, although I can't help thinking that being simple was the reason the problem arose in the first place, and the device was actually assembled incorrectly. Given the shape of the mount it can only be oriented as shown in my picture, so I can think of no other reason why the picture should be upside down.
