Staying at the sportsground in Barcaldine, second time here over last 2 years. Facilities here are excellent, toilets spotless. Big problem appears to be that the local camping grounds are trying to get this closed down and using some underhand tactics. We are paying $25 for a powered site here, the money going to the local sports club so it is staying in the town. Can the same be said of the privately owned camping grounds in the town? All grey nomads should get behind this facility as we could lose it.
We signed the petition a few weeks ago, but we were not staying there, we stayed at the free camp called Lloyd Jones Weir about 15 k out of Barky, on the Alice River

DUNMOWIN is no longer on the road and still DUNMOWIN!
I was there last year and was equally happy with it. Barcy in general actually. I didn't hear of the CP's complaints at the time, but heard plenty since.

The caravan parks in town have the council in court at the moment trying to close the Lloyd jones weir as well.
These park owners must have rocks in there head, if this is closed we will not support their parks anyway, they are just killing the town that they are a part of.
When we came through there were plenty of vans in the park, not as though there were none there.

I didnt hear about complaints either, but the cp had complaints about the show grounds the price they use to charge,so they had to match the cp price. rvtraveller2
I just sent this to the council after reading this thread...
To whom it may concern
I just sent this note through a generated form on your web site, I was not sure if it went or not.
My Husband and I have just built a new Motorhome, and someone was mentioning that your Town was really worth visiting.
In the process of looking at what you have to offer I have found there is a movement going on to close down two lovely spots for independent camping. We built our rig to be totally self sufficient, and generally like to stay independent. We have found that caravan parks often insist we book in advance, which we cannot do and then we have to spend ages filling out forms and get squeezed into small area next to permanent people that are often not very friendly, and if it is busy they are full. We then need to move on to the next town if there is no free or independent areas to stop for the night, thus leaving our money in the next town not yours.
We always spend money in the towns we stop at, and enjoy other facilities that you offer, not to mention food and fuel.
We do stay in Caravan parks, but we like to have the choice if the Caravan park is not suitable. I am sending this to help you understand the issues and the loss of business you will be forcing on other business in your town.
Some towns offer free dump stations, fresh water and lovely clean grassy area to stay and have a generous attitude to visitors, these are the towns a traveler will keep going back to. I had never heard of your town and with in a five min search I found out this negative information.
Good luck in your decision, as I know these issues are not easy. Although I do realise that Town Councils are committed to looking after all business in their area and I know you will look for ways to encourage people with Motorhomes and caravans to visit your town more independently if they wish.
Please email me if this information is incorrect, as I would love to put your town on our must see list, and to inform others. regards
