Australian Republican Movement - Revised Policy - Non Political

The ARM under the leadership of Maj Gen Michael Keating (Retired) has a revised Vision and Policy which is worth reading, click on the policy section of the link shown.  ARM is also on Facebook and Twitter.

Even if you oppose and Australian Republic and favour Australian remaining a Monarchy, I would encourage you to read this Vision and Policy so that you can make an informed comment rather than a comment that is ill informed or scaremongering.

Please note that ARM is non political and is not allied to any political party.  Also, changing the flag is not part of the ARM platform or policy in fact many ARM members are opposed to a change in our Flag and this is a separte issue.  See;

 http://www.republic.org.au/

There is a site that want to change our Flag calle Ausflag, and it is their policy to change the flag, they are no connected with ARM.  If you want to see what their platform is google their site.

By the way, I fly the current Australian Flag at home (daily).

Hi Vic,

Thanks for the link.
Our last place I would raise and lower the Aussie flag daily, ...and it was always a great indicator of where and how strong the wind was blowing.

I love our Flag, it may not be current or seen as politically correct...but, it is a great design! and tells a story..... I have seen some current design ideas ;(  40 years ago I was ready to give it the flick...I must be getting sentimental. ....lol

Cheers Sharon

No worries Sharon,

I do like our current flag (for historical reasons and it looks nice) and am proud to fly it, I also like the Aboriginal and Torres Island Flags.

If for some reason we did have a flag change some time in the future I would be proud to fly that too, but only if it had a suitable design, not crossed bananas or something (got to watch out for the Queenslanders, they will try anything, lol!) and of course we know what Wombat would have on his design! ha ha.

Vic,

Ohh yes I remember the Banana republic! Poor Wombat, no design sense.

Australia being a republic was a yell I had in my youth and I did get very verbal about it.

I created so much hostility in people I got off my soap box, 40 years ago not too many over 25's were interested.

I am happy for the youth to bang the drum, although I think more are interested in the global warming, animal welfare and fraking.  Me, I just want to get famous!...lol

I think it will happen eventually Sharon, but perhaps not in our lifetime, but who knows.

I remember a WW2 Digger being banned from the Newcastle RSL at the time of the referendum because he voted for a Republic, apparently having fought for his country wasn't enough to have the freedom to vote the way he wanted to. They considered he was "unpatriotic" .  It made the newspapers at the time.

Funny now, when you have a retired Major General heading the Australian Republican Movement pushing for a Republic.

That's my feeling too.  I believe the appropriate time to make the change is when an overwhelming majority favour it, not just a simple majority as the issue still has the potential to be divisive.

Yes I also agree Vic and Jimricho...much better to let things happen in its own course. That really is an idea I have acquired as I have aged......I can not believe I can now walk away from an argument.....not that my sweetie would concur...lol

I don't think we'd be so insecure under the British Monarchy if we were happy with the present Government.
If we were familiar with the Constitution of this country, I have a feeling we'd all be very enlightened and maybe learn we are being mislead instead of Governed.
I do believe we will become an independent country eventually, but not in my lifetime either.

How about we form a Grey Nomads government CG, now that would be interesting, we could all park our RV's and tents on the lawns outside Parliament House in Summer and have a winter Parliament up North somewhere where it's nice and warm.....all modern amenties, water power fitted of course........reduce former pollies pensions and increase other pensions, boy we could have a ball!

Gosh CG it is very hard to read between the lines of your post .... I think this thread is getting very close to political. I won't voice my leanings. I will add that we are a colonised country and have inherited the cumulative consequences of that and have a responsibility to deal with them. That can be interpreted in many ways - we are all part of a big family with lots of intriguing offshoots and the more we talk the better.

My apologies too Elle, although my comments weren't directed at any particular government they could be construed as being political, but comments said tongue in cheek and in good humour.

I think things might change when the monarchy changes. I really admire the Queen, she does a difficult job beautifully. I might be a bit less loyal after she's gone. And yes I know the monarchy is more politically than the monarch.

As long as she's not costing us anything anymore, she can stay as long as she likes, and young Will is a worth inheritant.
My comments are often tongue in cheek, making them food for thought.

Yep all that lot are not of much relevance these days - they do us cost a bit when they decide to come visiting and CHOGM costs are huge but that's a side issue. I have been doing some family history stuff and have found several common ancestors with my new found Aunty Betty and Uncle Phil so actually I say dash the republican movement and vote for me as the next Governor General.

No Vic the man is an upstart country bumpkin peasant and has no pedigree - the job naturally should go to someone of distinguished breeding and demonstrated bloodlines... mind you Vlad the Impaler and his lines would probably have more claim than me. Never mind. I was hoping for a fat salary that would support my nomading. Dream on....
