I just drop into the showgrounds as I pass them and usually they take campers, have had a few knockbacks, but not many.

We are currently at Inverell showground $15.00 a nite

Googled showgrounds and found this site, doesn't advise re camping but lists all showgrounds and addresses/maps

http://www.street-directory.com.au/sd_new/community.cgi?UrlSD=Australia/Keyword/Showground&SearchName=showground%20&SearchBy=keywords&State=2&Force=ok&&keywords=showground&paymentmethods=

Might be worth a check when looking for a certain town showground

John

Arrived at Grafton SG about lunchtime, plenty of headwind from Inverell to Glenn Innes, but it seemed to disappear on the run across the mountains to Grafton, plenty of rain, fog & one real long down hill run into Jackadgerry about 14k I think, so wouldn`t like to do the reverse trip........anyway back to the showgound report: nice level sites, power, water & facilities are ok, good supply of hot water & one washing machine in laundry.....oohhhh cost $20pn or stay for the week & $95pwk or $13.60pn, how good is that !!.........we are here for the week due to previous committments, grounds are located almost in the middle of town with all the usual shopping therapy on tap...Telstra & Vodaphone/3 mobile available.

Brian,,,,we know the place, beautiful and only minutes from town, would suggest you try the Sporting Club for a meal...was excellent & cheap the last time we were there.

Plenty of rain here and hoping it will fine up for the week end, if not there`s not much we can do and will pull out out on Monday & head towards Lismore as we have a relative in hospital there and should visit while we are in the area.....will probably stay at Alstonville SG which from reports are ok.

Cheers

Frank

Alstonville is ok, they have a huge shed there and the caretaker usually lets you park in there, it is dry and flat and you don't even have to put your awning out as you are under cover, the toilets and showers are good as well

Arrived Alstonville this morning only to find another bloody dog show about to take place & therefore could only have 1 night....waste of time so went looking and found a reasonably priced CP for Ballina right opposite family, so very convenient....facilities spotless and lovely drive thru, so will do for the short time we are here.

Tried to stay at Alstonville SG about a week ago only to be denied due to the Australian Dog Trials Titles being run there, however checked with Capt Grumpy otherwise known as the Caretaker about future possibilities and confirmed price was $15pn....fine, off we go to Tenterfield SG for the week end and then down to South West Rocks to catch up with family for a few days....ring the Capt back yesterday about a spot for 4 days only to find that it`s all too much trouble and the price has now risen to $20pn, possible I know, but me smells a rat, so when doing business with this guy be careful..........might just have a word with a few folk about his business methods I think !

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT CAUGHT UP WITH THE NEWS INVERELL COUNCIL HAVE SHUT DOWN THE SHOWGROUNDS FOR CAMPING, WE WERE OK ON THE WAY THROUGH A FEW WEEKS BACK, BUT NOT SO ON OUR RETURN JOURNEY....SEEMS THE NEW OWNER OF THE CP ACROSS THE ROAD THINKS WE OWE HIM A LIVING.HOWEVER THE SG CARETAKER HAS OTHER IDEAS, THE MESSAGE IS WATCH THIS SPACE, HOPEFULLY THE CARETAKER HAS AN ACE OR TWO UP HIS SLEEVE AS COUNCIL MAY NOT HAVE THE LEGAL POWER THEY THINK THEY HAVE...TIME WILL TELL !!

If you're in that area, I have to say that the Mann River free camp is one of the nicest I've ever seen. The tell me the old Grafton - Glenn Innes Road (on which the above is situated) is a beautiful drive,  though not suitable for caravans. Unfortunately I didn't have time to check it out when I was there.

Some of em just don't get it do they! On a single pension how can anyone pay $30pn (equivalent to mor than half the pension).  If there's a free camp we can spend our food and fuel money in the town, if not we just can't stay there.

DOG LADY...I agree that most folk not on a pension or some form of fixed income simply have no idea of living in this manner and it`s not until we reach those golden years to find out how much money most of us have wasted over the previous years on trivial things....newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, alcohol etc.

Earlier this year we stayed almost exclusively at various showgrounds in Northern NSW & SW Qld......terrific spots, some better than others and now some of them closed by local Council after complaints from CP Owners........little do the other shop keepers/business folk realise that the action of one CP Owner immediately affects each of them as we simply stratch that town off our list of places to stay and move on as there are plenty of smaller towns only too happy to welcome us into their community...yeah the penny hasn`t dropped !!

Hi,

Thru the following website you can select the State, then the town & full information re current committee & for those show societies that permit camping, details are included to assist the travelling public.

http://www.agshowsnsw.org.au/index.cfm?page_id=1068&page_name=Interstate%20Contacts

Don't forget that most  show grounds have volunteers to provide the facilities suitable for your camping, respect & at least dispose of rubbish correctly.

I often wonder how pensioners survive paying showground fees of $15 a night. (is that per person or per van). That's $210 out of a pension every fortnight. With insurance and pink/green slips etc. how does one manage? We plan to do some free camping but wonder about the safety in out of the way areas.
