I am a fan of micky thompson AT tyres, the 5 rib pattern. I dont do a lot of hardcore 4x4ing. These tyres have a 14mm depth when new, my first set after 60000km had on average 8mm of tread left. They had traveled at least half that milage on tracks such as the birdsville track which consist of gibber rocks etc. One tyre (RHS rear) had some chipping on the tread but tread depth continued to wear at the same rate as other tyres. I rotated the tyres every 10000km using a 6 tyre rotation (have 2 spares). The tyres were removed only because I used to fit new tyres before every major trip. cheers blaze ps Had simular experience on the next set although were replaced at about 50000km with simular tread depth. I use maxxis 751 ats on my hilux and got 40000klms out of the last set , and am still using one as a spare. They are definately cheaper than coopers, and have good pucture resistance. I do mostly road with a bit of beach work, and they are great.
At the moment we are running Michellin LTX A/T on our Ford Ranger with 68572 on the clock and still look like we could get another 10,000 out of them. We do predominantely black top with some dirt/gravel road.
I have Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 on my prado which were standard when purchased and got 70000 klms out of them and still had tread but replaced them in perth as I was not game to go off road with all the razor rocks Ken
I'm on the second set of Cooppers HT on my old Patrol.
I do >90% road pulling van.
On my first set I got around 74,000km & they were still legal with maybe 20,000km legal tread left, according to the tyre (tire) mechanic.
I put them on at 115830 & replaced them at 189767.
They were replaced because I was off to WA on a 15,477km (from my records) trip.
I am still running on that set at 241,891 (that's 52,124km)
with lots of tread left.
I have heard though that a particular Coal Gas Co on the Darling Downs had problems with the off road product of Coopers, splitting in their harsh conditions.
But I'll look favourably at Coopers HT if there's a next time.

i use Pirelli Scorpions on my pathfinder, and have done for 4 yrs, had friends change their cooper tyres to Pirelli's while travelling with us around OZ.
I have Goodrich All Terrains and have been around the country twice, down the middle once, and some offroad in the Kimberley, and dirt roads in SA. They're about half worn. I am considering Mickey Thompsons when I change over. I've heard Coopers have softer walls and don't cope with real bush terrain as much as the advertising says. I don't know what the ply is, but for an expensive tyre I'd expect more. The dunlops have a good rep if you're not doing hard core off road. Black top and open surfaced roads don't present too much threat to any tyres.

Checked around today as the Pathfinder has 17 inch wheels the tyres come in just over $300 each , it appears that the 17 inch size presents a supply problem for most dealers . The best write up and price so far are the Pirelli Scorpions from Jaxs. Some of the dealers I went to didn't seem all that interested in discussing the tech aspects and just gave me the first price in the book they could find ,just have to keep at it

Don't know about your type of vehicle Wombat, but on my former X'Trail I used Bridgestones and got a fair run out of them 65,000. I then put on Toyo's, a bit dearer but have a deeper thread and are supposed to last a lot longer, didn't have them long enough to find out.

Got onto my local GT Radial dealer and he has the Silverstone and GT Radial The GT radial he said will give me 70 - 80000 and come with a 5 year warranty (for what that"s worth I don't know) the tread pattern and depth looks very much like Coopers They come in at about $270.00 each and Silverstone come in at $207.00 which is much cheaper than Coopers .
Still researching the other brands . At this stage I'm in two minds, GT Radials or Pirelli Scorpions
To let every one know what the prices are like I'll post the brands and prices I've been able to gather locally

My experience with scorpions isnt nice, towing 20 foot boat down hill doing about 90km with my old range rover and had a delamanation. All the tread come off and ended up around the axle after taking out the rear quarter panel. The saving grace was the tyre stayed inflated. Tyres had been checked at 45 psi not many km before and the tyre company said there was no signs of under inflation and had no explanation to why it happened. They were all removed within 100km and 3 days of that incident and I will never run them again. cheers blaze

Had the very same problem towing a caravan on Dunlops the tread departed company with the case but the case stayed up so I could still get off the road and jack it up Only doing about 50 Kph when mine let go thank Christ
