Information On Mobile Phone Plans.

Hi all,

This may come in handy for some members here. wink

I bought a new Nokia N97 last June and it has been playing up since day one. I am with Telstra for the coverage when we travel and have not had a problem with them in any regard, just the phone.

I went to their store to purchase the phone and as I don't get a lot of time during the week, went there on a Sunday to ask for it to be fixed about three months after purchase. We live about forty minutes from the nearest dealer so time needs to be put aside to do these jobs. smile

I was told the computers were down and they couldn't access my details so I would have to come back at a later date.

About three months later I got the chance and again went on a Sunday. Was told the same thing. I didn't rant an rave, just accepted this and went home to "back up" my info, which was there suggestion that day.

So about a month ago and two weeks before the 12 month warranty ran out, I figured I better get it done so went back, again on a Sunday and all was good, they took my phone, gave me a loaner and away I went. Around the Wednesday the next week they rang to say my phone was back so on the Sunday we went and picked it up.

I had it less than a day and it failed again so I took it straight back this time. They gave me another loaner, told me the problem was common in these phones and they would get it fixed.

The loan phone was pretty ordinary to say the least and didn't receive calls all that well either so after two weeks, we went over again last Sunday. The dude who takes your info as you walk in so you can get in the queque to be served asked if I had had a call from them to say it was ready. I said no, but the phone you gave me is playing up so we just thought we would call in. He assured me it wouldn't be ready but sent someone out to look anyway.

Low and behold, there was my phone with a note saying they had rang me on the tenth and there was no answer. It was the nineteenth when we went in, so one try was as much as they could manage.

My phone seemed good, they gave me a blurb about the loan phone having a glich which is fixed by switching on and off, they didn't say this when I received it though. And also that every three weeks on a Sunday, Telstra shuts the computers down in the stores for maintenance, which I didn't know before that.

Anyway, yesterday the phone played up again. We leave on our trip on Tuesday and we use our phone as our modem when we travel plus contacting the kids. I was ready to head over there again and see them and demand a new phone but instead, I rang the Telecommunications Ombudsman.

They told me that while under contract, the phone MUST do as it was advertised to do and Telstra or whoever your provider is, MUST make sure that this happens. It IS their responsibility even if the phone is out of warranty.

So my big winded post is more to tell you to ring an appropriate authority to get results as we as plebs, don't stand a real chance.

Sorta like Marj's problem, on a way smaller scale, but with the right information, armed and dangerous we can be.

The TIO have now taken up my fight and are trying to get me a new one before next Tuesday, fingers crossed. smile

FF, left it a bit close timewise, but I wish you luck, go sock it to em.

oh if they can't get it changed before you go away, perhaps you could ask them to send it to me and I'll look after it while you are away, could do with a new phone with a contract especially somebody else's biggrinbiggrin

It is a bit fine Wom, but not on my own doing for once. I will persevere with this one if I have to but they hope to have a win by Monday.

I'm not holding my breath though mate. wink

Hey Terro, like time no see mate, how have you been?

Yeah guys, no iphone here although they want us to get one. I now just want a phone that rings, messages, pictures and modems for our trips.

My laptop is my computer, not the phone. Half the problem with them these days I think, too much info in them. smile

FF I have one of those Nokias and it has been no problem at all - I must be one of the lucky ones. Like you I want a phone not computer.

Esmeralda, I do love the phone but the touch screen side of it freezes and its very frustrating. I don't like  the swipe to answer bit because it freezes as well.disbelief

Then its turn it off and on to make it go and if I can't turn it off cause its frozen, I have to pull the battery out.no

Glad you got a good one though mate, nice to hear. smile

I have a Sony Ericsson which I got about a year ago with my new Telstra plan. It has the flip lid which I find so much better, can't knock the buttons by mistake. Has never missed a beat.
Like others here I don't want a computer, just a phone I can ring, receive calls, send and receive txts and take the occasional photo when needed. Nothing else is needed.

They should be replacing it with a new phone, not trying to fix it.

Firefly - mine must be an older model again  - no touch screen.

I've had a Sony Ericsson since '08, and apart from a couple of issues with it turning itself on and/or off fixed by removing the battery and starting again, I've had not real problems.
The signal is something else. Just lately it's been dropping out for no particular reason in the middle of a call. The phone shows good signal but it just drops out and hangs up. Very frustrating when arguing with some wanker at the bank about a new transaction card.

Well would you believe I had another call from Telstra today. In fact, I was so gobsmacked I asked him if it was a gotcha call.

He assured me it wasn't and told me to take my phone into the nearest Telstra shop and they would sort it out for me.

Monday will be a very busy day me thinks. confuse
