Hi Hylda & Jon, We camped at Pussy Cat Flat, Pine Creek just over two weeks ago. It is 2ks out of town on the Kakadu Road. It would make a great camp from which to then venture into Kakadu from with day trips. It is in the Pine Creek Turf Club & $8.50 pp per night powered & is pet friendly. A nice friendly spot & they open the bar in the covered betting ring daily at 4pm & prepare the most delicious meals there if you want a change. Have a look on the way & if it appeals it would save you pulling the van & allow to get to areas that the van would not get into.

if you camp outside of Kaka you will pay every time you enter Kaka, years ago Kaka was free, then they started charging then nuimbers were down so they took the entry fee off again, now a few months ago back came the entry fee, think it is $25, I will not encourage them so will not enter Kaka until they stop charging, we now call it Kakadon't go there.

Having said that if you have not been it is a beautiful place to visit, the N'Parks area are very good for caravans $5-6 a night but I think no generators.

Thanks for the info but from what I have read & been told (plus I just rang Pussy Cat C/P to comfirm it) there is only a one off $25 fee p/p entry fee covering 14 days which allows you to leave & enter the park as many times as you like.

Thanks Terry, I was already considering Pussy Cat Flats which, I think, was mentioned by you in an earlier post for a base to see the closer sites but was thinking it maybe better to camp in the park itself to be closer to the northern section

biggrin If you go into Kaka then there are generator sites and non generator sites in the managed camp areas for around $10 per night per person..

Hi, my recollection is that the charge on Kakadu is $25 pp for a 14 day pass. Could be wrong, but I don't think so. At a pp charge that is $50 for us, a bit dear, but also we have a dog so would need to camp outside the NP anyway.

Do you mean you pay $25 to enter the park and an additional camping fee depending on the site you choose.

Prices vary ..... but that is typical of National Parks .... NSW Nat Parks in particular ..... a fee to enter ... and a fee per person per night ..... often it is more expensive to stay in a NSW Nat Park (with absolutely no facilities except a drop dunny) than at a van park.

About the only really good thing the old Labour Victorian Govt did was to abolish all Nat Park fees from 1 Jan 2011.

Not yet sure about QLD .... but I will find out soon when I finish doing some harvest work and begin 'travelling' again.

Even in WA I remember camping at Shannon Camp Ground in Shannon National Park near Manjamup. With the initial entry fee plus the camping fee for 2 people it was over $30 for 1 night, we stayed for a week so it was worth it in the long run. Shannon was a timber town in the Karri forest but now the campsite is on the old town site & it has reverted back to nature beautifully.

For a few days stay (you can base yourself there to explore the surrounding area) it's well worth a visit. Toilets are provided & a shower you have to light yourself is provided, fresh water near the old oval.

The thing that does annoy me about these Kakadu fee's is that if you live in NT you pay nothing to get into Kakadu, but if NT pensionser's travelling Australia pay about $3-4 to enter most WA national parks, I do realise that NT people pay rates, but so do we here in WA but we do not get free entry into our own national parks, we still have to pay.

Yes you do pay the $25 entry and camp fees on top, very expensive, but again I say if you have not been it is a beautiful place to visit

We will never again enter Kakadu until this fee is removed or at least lowered to the same fee charged by most national parks.

Pine Creek is a good 60km from the southern entrance to Kakadu, and it is a good 200km further to Ubirr in the park's far north. You need to have a think about what sites you want to see in Kakadu and work out how much travelling you will need to do from your chosen camp site. You could end up paying more in fuel than you save by staying at a cheaper camp site.
