Have been in there a couple of times, 2009 most recent. There's still a few km of gravel road - from memory, about 20? Need to watch out for the cattle grids and go very slow over those.

There is no longer year round camping at the National Park. I think National Parks do open it for some school holidays, but whether they do so at Xmas, you would have to contact them to find out. Or try web site.

Camping now is at the private Takkarakka caravan park/campground, about 5km from the end of the road and the start of the gorge walks. Takkarakka is very pleasant but not cheap. 2009 we paid $38 a night for a powered site. We were in a smaller section, that is a bit more bush like than their main section (to the right of the Reception building as you go in). The creek does curve around the edge of this section, and it is not far from those sites.

The dirt road into Takkarakka and the Gorge gets closed very quickly if there is any rain. Travellers are advised to take supplies for a few extra days because of this.

They do get bushfires in those parts too, that can close the park, but I am not sure what season is the main one for fires up there.

There are some great walks, but you are right, it will be hot, especially down in the Gorge.

Hi guys, I stayed at Carnarvon gorge last November and all the comments made by Wendy in her post are up to date and relevant. The number of wandering cattle and wildlife are numerous and not confined to the road leading into the NP;we had numerous encounters along the highway and the cattle blend in too well with the scrub.

I would definately check accommodation availability asap as it is very popular, good luck and happy travels,

cheers

ps: without sounding alarmist I would carry a pair of tweezers as tics are common & ample water as the walks can be long.

I was there last month(6-8may).A powered site was $42. The road was closed after 50mm of rain overnight. We were locked in for an extra day so they gave us the extra night for $20 .The road was muddy and slippery but no problem for a 4wd..
