RE: Darling

And then there's spell-check, with Amercian spelling. Grrrrrrrr........!
It's a dead give away when I receive a real letter by snail mail and the spelling is WRONG, according to this Australian.
Our teachers must be turning over in their graves.

Had teacher friends here from NZ last week. Just retired, he was a Principal.

He was telling me of something suggested that he read in NZ education bumf,   about allowing text type  spellings in exams.

Who knows ?  Suppose   " LOL"  and " IMHO"   might be allowed on the end of every line as well.

We've got off the thread a bit here I think. Sorry.

The one that annoys me is "are you done" instead of finished.

We owe it all to America - the good old U S of A, by virtue of television and other technology.

Even worse when one spells a word correctly and the spell checker nags us to change to the American spelling

Webster (as in dictionary) is to blame.

Why not reset you language prefs from within your browser:

in IE9 select tools/options/content click the languages tab (bottom left) click add and choose English (Australia)

in Firefox select tools/options/content click Choose tab (bottom right) click add and choose English/

Back on topic (sorry) In a Nursing Home, I once called a dear 97 year old man who was very ill "Darling" in front of his daughter who complained to my boss.
I apologised to his elderly wife and explained "Its because he really is a Darling" and she thought that was great and thanked us all for our loving care of him.
I guess some people get offended more easily than others.

It's all in the mind of the beholder. Polite, respectful kindness is one thing. Unwelcome familiarity is something else.
