Point & Shoot Camera Recommendations?

I think most of the smaller cameras have very similar specifications theses days, just don't buy the cheapest. We have a sony DSLR but it's bag etc. is not something that you can just take anywhere, so I also have a little Nikon Coolpix L20 that we keep in the glovebox. It is there for the times that we don't have the bigger camera and want to take a picture, it's also small enough for me to drop in my top pocket just in case.

A sample of it's pictures is in the seeing red comp, my picture titled "A Little Birdie", we were heading into town and seen him grabbed the camera and that's the result.

It has full auto or if you want to fiddle the manual mode is great, we've had it about a year and a half, paid about $130.00 for it.

And we're still using our original digital 'trial' camera, now four years old - a Canon A520. It operates as well as ever, pictures are good and clear, and it's only 'fault' is that its lens cover needs a bit of help to open!

So yes, it's good to have a 'pocket-sized' camera, and I'd probably still go with Canon, although my many years in film-based photography were with a Pentax SLR.

Thanks Andrea, I used to have a Canon Ixus was one of the originals only 3mp when they first came out, but great camera, got some really good photos, my brother now has it, he works/lives overseas and well its still going great as catch up with his photos on facebook etc... so might have a look at the Canons as am fimilar with how they operate etc.. just want a pocket size one for when out walking etc and to be honest I'm not that great with all the technical side of photography, did get the Canon G10 to try and learn, be more creative and I should try and get out with it more and experiment, but would love a pocket camera to have with me all the time

Yes, it does help when you're familiar with the way one brand works, they tend to have similar functions that you can find where you expect them to be!

we have a sanyo unit , its a great little video camera, but tricky to learn to use
takes video and pics all on sd card... ,im still learning how to use it, but you need a program
that accepts mp4 to edit them..

Re the L20.... Is it easy to either "force" the flash for fill flash shots, also to disable the flash when the smarts say it should be used but one doesn't wish to?

I too have Nikon DSLR but there are times when it's inconvenient to use due to it's size.

Yes it is quite simple, on the camera is a button with the flash symbol (lightning bolt) when you push this you can select Auto/Red eye reduction/Off/On/Fill.

I have an idea the L20 may be discontinued, not sure, just one of the websites I just looked at alludes to this. No doubt there would be an equivalent current model if this is so.

Hey Guys n Gals,

Was watching a TV show called the Gadget Show (British TV) on the net the other day and they did a PAS camera test, they tested the Canon, Sony and Fuli and the Fuji shone in every test...

It was quick, great quality pics in all light, good flash properties and easy to use all for a good price.
