End of Free Camping in Tasmania.

Reading the promo on the Home page I was wondering what was going on.confuse

Yes, it is true that in a couple of instances, silly people are ruining it for everyone by camping in reserves or car parks next to legitimate caravan parks.

They even have the nerve to walk in and use the facilities and wonder why park owners are screaming?furious

We are VERY laid back here in Tasmania.  Every day I pass thru the waterfront at Blackmans Bay, Kingston, Sandy Bay and see motor homes/camper vans parked in car parking spaces for their "freebie."

Most times, the local residents don't worry too much, BUT when the campers leave rubbish bins full and take up two or more spaces half way thru the morning, it is only fair that shop keepers and locals complain.

Free (or low cost) camping will ALWAYS be a part of Tasmania, the councils and businesses support it.  wink

But the number of places will deminish IF selfish people continue to take advantage.

Come here by all means.

You are VERY welcome, but don't ruin it for us.

Dustysmile

You know guys, I agree with you both and this is Australia wide as well Dusty. smile

There is always the minority that make things difficult for the majority in most walks of life and camping is no different. no

As for trying to park your van at a shopping centre, don't get me started Jim biggrinbiggrin

There are always people around that stuff it up for the rest.  Having said that I often place a 'self checking' process on what I do, hoping not to be one of those people.

A few years ago I pulled into a big shopping centre carpark, towing another van & there was hundreds of vacant places to park.  I decided to park at the back of the carpark, away from everyone else, as I always try to do.  I parked across 2 spaces length wise & as I was climbing out of my car this <snip> pulled along side me nearly collecting me and my door.  I remained calm & went about getting ready to go inside to get my shopping.

As I walked away from my rig, this <snip>  who had been watching me from inside his car called out to me.  I approached him & asked him to repeat what he had said, I didnt hear him  He asked me if I was going to park like that, taking up two spaces.  I looked at my position & I said, "If you can show me how to fit it into one space, we'll give it a go".  He then told me that I was being selfish.  I replied, "What do you want me to do, fold it up and put it in my pocket? "

Anyway, things then progressed down hill after that & after he screached away from where we were, I looked around at all the empty car spaces & thought to myself, "what?"

Anyway, my moral to the story is, YOU might think you are doing things the right way BUT OTHERS may perceive that differently.  Ultimately, if this nutcase went off to complain about me, he could have virtually painted any colour to it & thats what people will hear about, not actually what happened.

So, if you stop somewhere for lunch & sit on a stool under your electric awning watching the view & eating a sandwich, that local pain in the whatchamacallit, may just drive past & perceive something completely different.  ohmygod.gif

No problem with "overlength" vehicles parking in shopping centres or even stopping for a break when they use parking spaces "correctly."

Have a BIG PROBLEM when I see "motorhomes" that have parked across three or four angle parking places for the night and are still there mid morning with other people looking for parking spots.

Common courtesy does come into play!

I agree totally Dusty, but you see everyone is different.  In my case not only was I just parked in the two spaces lengthways, I was well within the line markings width wise as I always try to park over as close to the kerb as possible (I was in the end spot with the garden to my left).  I hate people opening their doors on my vehicle, which is why I do that.

Had the carpark been full OR it been a weekend, there is no way I would of driven in there in the first place, I try to plan my Supermarket assaults more carefully than that.

I am sure this guy had me right next to the door of the supermarket parked accross 6 spots, I was probably also naked and drunk & setting fire to other parked cars.  Can you imagine what sort of unwarranted damage people can do to reputations by simply exaggerating stuff.

People do it all the time when the don't like something they see.  Others like me do it after fishing trips wink.gif

Jack,

No problems, I wasn't having a go at you, and know exactly where you are coming from.

We have a classic car, one of only about 100 left in the world. Have spent (to us) a fortune getting it restored to mint condition.

Took it over to Adelaide a couple of years ago and on the way we stopped at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat.

Car park was nearly empty, but being very protective of the car, we parked it as far away as possible from the entrance, by itself and like you, one side next to a tree. When we left it there was nobody within cohee. Came out after doing the tourist thing and you guessed it! Still hardly a car in the car park, BUT jammed in right next to us a &^%#@ motorhome. Not a car space away, but litterally on top of us.

I am convinced it is the "herding" instinct.

Dusty

PS. Sorry to get off the subject, but I thought I may owe Jack an explanation.

We were having problems with back packers and those unroadworthy Wicked Campers they travel in groups and park up alongside one another and use the space between as their crappa and general garbage tip then drive off leaving piles of toilet paper and take away wrappers leaving it for others to clean up. They do the same across Europe especially France.
