Will spend tomorrow packing and sorting with the intention of heading off on Tuesday. A wise man told me to don't think too far ahead, so only planning a couple of days at a time. Will head to Childers and Gin Gin first day and have a look around before heading into Bundy the day after.
There are a few good freecamps in the book for the area so won't be a problem. Have also rang a couple of caravan parks in Bundy for prices as a backup, but not booked anything yet.
Keeping fingers crossed for a smooth few days, checking oil and water each morning, Yes I know, won't forget. Still close enough to sons if need be and may come back on Friday for the Biggenden Show on the weekend.

H.W.When you are in Childers check out the Backpackers Museum,the memorial to the kids who died in the arson attack a few years ago.It is the most eerie feeling when you are walking around looking at the exibits.Well worth the effort to view them.Happy mptoring,let Myrtle know who is the boss,they try and take over you know.I fixed my Toyota camper up by driving past a few motor wreckers and told Tyson that that is where he will end up if he plays up anymore.Worked a treat,good as gold from then on.Lol.Cheers Ted.

Hi Trevor here,there is a place in Bundaberg called Baldwin's swamp.I know sounds yucky but it is a nice wetland area and I freecamped there for a couple of nights just before Xmas.Some nice walks through the area with some great birdlife.

There is a caravan and motorhome place called Caseys if you have any vehicular needs.They fitted my aircon which is why I freecamped accross the road at Baldwin's.

There is also a Nature reserve between Gin Gin and Bundaberg,cannot remember the name offhand,very basic but handy for both.It's about five K's outside of Bundy,

we stayed at lighthouse caravan park burnett heads when we were up there, pulled in for a week and stayed 3 months friendly people clean toots small park,
we loved it was a great place to winter.
wasnt very expensive.

HW, so pleased to see that you are rested and ready to "get out there" again.

That is good advice from Father Ted re: the Backpackers Memorial. Really well done and one of the most touching things that I have seen. One tip...take the tissues.

The poor birds are feeling the rain more than me, sitting around under the balcony huddled together they look so cute.
Vans half packed, taking my time as having had the trip up know where I put things that didn't feel right and where I need to put things to get at them quick.
Have noted the Swamp in Bundy, walked all around it 2 years ago, beautiful spot. If I can find a freecamp there I will use it.
The kids want me to be here for the Biggenden show, so at the moment just working my dates around that which is this next weekend.
If the sun shines can get into Bundy and back before Friday. Or wait and go after the show and spend longer in there. Either way will go in sometime inthe next few days.

Hey - good to hear you sounding positive - take small steps - stay not far from son - take it easy. I'm flying to Mackay for five days on 15 June - staying out on the Peak Downs Hway with some friends - should be good fun - two little kids that I am lik a nana to - can't wait to see them.

HW, part II.

Please also remember to check your tyre pressures, needs to be done either depending on the kilometres you've travelled OR by time expired since the last check. You probably should be checking the pressures every other week, most people seem to forget this important part of the preparedness routine.

Underinflated tyres will increase your fuel bill, they will cause unnecessary tyre wear & worst of all if seriously deflated cause possible tyre failure.

Also remember to smile & smell the roses as you travel HW.

It's a bummer being so close, yet not able at this stage to come down and visit while you're there. Have to go a couple of hours North tomorrow, to house-sit a friend's place [ and feed Animals and Birds] while they come to Rocky for Medical reasons.

Another couple of weeks 'till I'm debt-free, then I can start thinking about going places again, although vehicle Rego. will be coming up soon.

Actually I have no idea what the tyre pressure should be on these tyres. Will have to ring S in L tomorrow, not sure if my son here would know, will check with him in the morning first.
I always knew for my little car but haven't looked into it with Myrtle. Thats bad. I do look at them and they look ok, but thats not the way to do it I know.

Hi HW , the tyer preasure settings should either be on a plate some where in the van,
maybe on the area when you open your front doors, like in my mazda 2
or in a book that came with the van, i hope it came with a book?
either that go to a tyer place and they might be able to help out..have fun

The maximum tyre pressure will be stamped on the side of the tyres. You'll have to have a bit of a search around the tyre to find it. It will be located with the max load, both load and pressure will probably be quoted in both metric and imperial measurements.

In the absense of any better information it may be best to inflate them to somewhere near this max value as "Myrtle" is probably well loaded with the fit-out plus the stuff you're carrying.

Buy a tyre pressure gauge and check them when the tyres are cold, i.e. before you've driven any significant distance.

My son, who used to work in the tyre industry, says to inflate more than what it says inside the door frame. eg: if it says 32 go for 35. It helps to preserve the life of your tyres, particularly when loaded.

If you report back on the tyres you are running, thats Brand, model & SIZE, I will check it out for you.

The tyre size is the series of numbers that runs like this 185/65/R14.

The fronts are Remingon LTR 11 185R14C 102/100P

The backs are Goodyear G28 185R14C 102/100P

They all look quite new, with plenty of tread.

None of them have the 65 or any other number in the middle of those numbers.

Sorry HW, Thats my bad. I should have realised they would of had tyres of that spec on there. Van & light commercial tyres & the type can be marked slightly differently, as you have correctly recorded.

Okay, to help you. The 185 relates to the width of the tyre - 185mm.

The R14, tells us its a 14 inch wheel/tyre(diameter) & the R stands for radial.

The 102/100 is the load rating. In this case your vehicle has a single rear wheel so the 102 applies to it & means the tyre has a maxium load rating of 840kg. Now don't panic, each axel of the vehicle has two tyres = 1680kg.

I also believe those tyres to be rated to a max speed rating of R (according to Bridgestone), R = 170km/h. (just in case you decide to give that next hoodlum a run at the lights). I would be cautious because Im not sure about the other brand, if they are rated to the same speed. The tyre itself actually tells me the tyre is only rated to 150km/h, Im not sure why their online advise contradicts this. Shouldnt be an issue for you.

I checked online & it says a Max pressure of 65PSI/450kpa for those tyres.

Now that the Max pressure they recommend, normally this is the COLD PRESSURE recommendation, as tyres do heat up as they roll along, but for this purpose thats neither here nor there, but you should check the pressures and adjust them when the tyres are cold.

The amount of tyre pressure you put into your tyres will go up as the tyres load does. So, if Myrtle is full of gear & you think fairly heavy, then you might get close to 60-65 PSI with them. Its a bit hard to guage from here, how much weight do you think you have loaded into her?

Remember you can't guage it by eye & reasonable guages arnt that expensive, but don't go for the cheap k-mart one (especially the ones for a few $$$). I also dont like the old style at the Service Stations the ones that every person drops when using. Some service stations have the new digital type with the guage not actually in the hand peice, I've found them to be relatively accurate, checked against my own guage.
