I always leave my camping area cleaner than I found it.
I will be using the naptholene flakes around the wheels when i can get some, can't use moth balls in the van, wouldn't be able to breath. There is a cheap shop back home that sells mothballs. I can't walk in there without gasping for breath. Was only told about the flakes tonight on the phone, told to sprinkle a ring around each wheel. Wonder if Eucalyptus or Tea Tree Oil would work as well as I have a bottle of both. Does anyone know, in place of peppermint oil on cottonballs??
Never thought about that. I have one that I loaned to a friend once . She was very pleased with it. Fixed her problem in a few days.
And it cleaned my place out when I came back from my Cruise. Had been away a couple of months, and came home to find mice running over my Kitchen benchtops. Got rid of them nicely.
Cheers,
Sheba.
Shot gun or electronic device?
Jack, if you read my original post, you will see no mention of a shot gun.
I dont think so HW, but I know lavender deters some critters, so it might work, certainly be nicer than the smell of mice! I know how you feel, thank heaven they are in the car and not the caravan. Our car stinks of them, dont know how many there are, or how they got in. Have cleaned it out, put down a couple of baits (provided by the owner of this camp ground) which were eaten in a flash and bits of bait were carried all over the inside of the car along with plenty of droppings. Yuk! Got peppermint oil today plus more baits, and cleaned it out all over again. At least it smells better.
I bought a large can of NO Vac, carpet foam, commerciall strength, Sprayed the whole van, upholstery, timber, everything. Don't have much of a smell at all now. Just wish i knew they were all gone.
Gday all,jus spent 10 days goin round the 'Yorke Pen.' mice ALL OVER!! layin in the swag they jus run all over the mossie mesh, a real pain in the ass!A lady in a m/home was trappin 6/8 every nite ,& was sayin they run all over her bed ,she had t sleep with her head under the sheets!! Not happy....Hope t spend a few days round the murry rv. so hopefully they wont be there......

Sorry, we've just come accross from Canberra to nr Port Augusta, they are really thick in that direction! I think they'll continue until we get a couple of frosts.
We are heading up the Stuart Hway tomorrow, hoping there might be less of them in the desert?
Gerty Dancer, where did you get the peppermint oil, none in this small town so will try in a larger one next time I go there, Thought maybe priceline ore health shop.
Have just cleaned out the Prado (AGAIN! ) at Coober Pedy, the second packet of baits nearly all gone, think theres just a little less mess. It was actually Peppermint Essence HW, made the car smell better but I dont know if it made them go????
A family friend came around to have a look at the van, Opened the doors, slid open the cupboard and there was a mouse eating the pellets. It ran to the back of the cupboard, she said Catch it!! I did, grabbed it by the tail and took it outside and beat it to death, then threw it over the boundary fence.
Can't believe it was still there after all the cleaning I've done. It had to be the same one that ran out of the van at the weekend when I was cleaning it out. Definitely won't be back this time. We filled up the gap in that cupboard with steel wool and I threw peppermint essence soaked cottonballs in every cupboard. Haven't found the oil so the essence will have to do and by the sound of Gertys post it does work.
Daily cleaning of the car has yielded 2 bodies, plus we caught one in a trap. BUT, theres at least one other dead mouse somewhere in the car, have searched as many nooks and crannies as possible, but it is well hidden, and smells really juicy!!
Will be driving with all windows down for a few days.
Someone mentioned spraying with Glen20 Gerty, thankfully I have no smells of dead ones inside. Or try the peppermint oil as it freshens up the inside as well.
My sister lives in a little town out near Griffith, called Hillston and the mice are there big time.
She uses peppermint oil she bought years ago and use to put it around her sons cot to stop them climbing up. They have always had problems there with mice.
She also says some are having success with vanilla. Hanging those vanilla tree car air freshners in and around seems to deter them as well.
We have mothballs through the back of the ute now, I am buying the oils today and I will certainly be trying the vanilla trees.
In my search yesterday for the sonic deterrents, I found some that were solar powered that I thought may be good for travelling.

It was I, Marj. There was a residual smell of mouse piddle in the carpets so used Glen 20 to neutralise it with some degree of success. I didn't use it as a mouse repellant as it was well and truly cactus (do you like that technical terminology!) by that stage.
Glen 20 is great in the car isn't it Jim. I give ours a good spray on a regular basis when we travel, a nice mild smell that brings the interior back to a friendly atmosphere after being in the car for days.

Definitely better than a mouse piddle/poo smell, Linda! Hadn't used it in the car before but yes, you're right. Although if too much is used I find the smell of the Glen20 can be a bit overpowering. (I guess I'm stating the obvious)
Oh Lordy - I had better drive straight home rather than stop the night somewhere on the way - I leave here Friday or Saturday. Esmeralda has more gaps and hole than you can shake a stick at - probably explains why it gets so cold at night. Of course none of these were obvious when I bought her. Mice, can't stand them. Must buy naphthalene flakes, etc, etc. before I leave just in case.

The most common cause of ingress for mice is the door(s), both the van and car. If you have holes in the van suggest you go around them with the silicone or that Ramset foam stuff, not only for the mice but for other creepy crawlies as well.
Just been informed by my grandaughter their dog Jake chased a mouse into my room while they were watching a movie in hte family room. I have searched high and low, can't find it. Told sons partner when I arrived downstairs smelt of mice, time to put some mouse traps out. A few other places here have said they have seen plenty, so can't blame me for bringing this one in. Son said their rental place they were catching one a night so they are everywhere. Keeping fingers crossed they don't go back in van as have packed everything back in except what I am actually using. The grandkids want me to stay for the show so will be on the road next Monday now.
Went through a few mouse plagues when I lived in the Western District of Victoria, years ago. You know you really have a problem when the resident cat goes green and puts his paws over his eyes when a mouse appears in front of him. I kid you not - this truly happened.
The mouse plague in Hillston when I was younger was horrid too Wendy. It was a tempory grain storage that started it, right in the middle of town really.
All boxed food in the cupboards were put in the fridge, mice would run across you in bed, babies cots had to have the feet in buckets of water to try and stop them getting in there and they would run up your leg if you stood still long enough.
Its the smell thats the worse thing and nothing covers it up does it.

The Sturt Highway west of Hay is paved with mouse fur. The roadhouse had everything stored in mouse-proof containers. We saw a couple in camp in SA's mid-north, but they didn't get into my camp bed.

They are bad here in Biggended too, I only brought a couple with me. The town is inundated with them. Mouse traps are being bought in packs to get rid of them. Seen a few around sons house over the last few days. Bought traps myself today while over in Maryborough and also Vanilla trees. As well have the peppermint oil on cottonballs thrown in the van cupboards and steel wool in all the gaps. I'm trying everyhting that has been suggested on here, all at once.
