It sounds like the sinking of the HMAS Sydney.
Was it Geraldton or was it somewhere else?
I think that one was answered a couple of years ago. It was off Geraldton where the spectacular memorial is erected.
Maybe the black stump applies to wherever there's a black stump.
"Elsewhere" is Lyndhurst. "Nowhere Else" is near Elliston on SA's west coast.

Ted, it is ordinary thats for sure. It was an amazing place once.

 

 

Another disgrace is the Wharf at Mooloolaba,run down,dirty,not a good advert for the Sunny Coast.To be fair a couple of the food stalls were clean and the attendants/staff pleasant and polite. A great shock to see such a great attraction being allowed to fall into something that was only a step up from a slum.Thats the way I saw it.no

I agree Father Ted I was at Mooloolaba Wharf last week and was so dissapointed with it, very run down, such a shame it has so much potential

gillyb, I'm so disappointed to hear about Mooloolaba Wharf  cry

It's about 5 years since I've been there....but when I lived up there it was one of my favourite spots.

 Another one (Black Stump) at Cassillis in the Upper Hunter Valley.  My point being that the locals of these places seem incapable of coming up with something original and in the case of the Bigs, less kitschy and more imaginative.

I relate to the statue of Makybe Diva at Port Lincoln's foreshore in SA.
The owner lives and has a tuna export business there, but the horse has never been there. Just coz it wond 3 consecutive Melbourne Cups it gets to be remembered in bronze.
It's a beautiful bronze statue created by talented wood carver of some renown, Ken Martin. He's very understated, but oh, so clever with his hands. He brings wood to life.

Its like street names in close together towns Jim, no imagination at all mate. In this area we have names spelled so close together its hard to tell them apart. Like Comfort and Comerfort, caw blimey. no

In Gawler they have streets from First to Fourteenth. There are others like Railway Terrace, but some are named after prominent locals.

A tastful and artistic statue as you describe is a whole lot different to the cringe-worthy Bigs.

There's a Gunsynd statue at Goondiwindi too.  IMHO these statues are not overdone, nor do I think are the bulls (bullocks?) in the Rocky roundabouts and they do convey something about the town.

That big Captain Cook statue on the Capt Cook Hwy coming out of Cairns to the north has to be one of the ugliest and crassest monuments to James Cook there is!

Speaking of race horses, there is a statue of Paleface Adios at Temora in the main street.

Speaking of street names we have Wason Street in Ulladulla and seven kilometers up the road at Milton, you guessed it, there's a Wason Street. Both spelt the same.

And then there is Warden Street and Warden Road, both in Ulladulla and about 500 meters apart.
