28,000 RV Sites

We're of to the US shortly to see our daughter in San Diego.
After that we'll be doing some touring (Car & Motels) in the south west states. Southern Califorina, Arizona, Navada & southern Utah.
As it's a really long days drive from San Diego to Phoenix we've decided to just do the 200Km to Yuma the first day out to lessen the second days drive.
I Googled Yuma to see what the local attractions were besides the lower Colorado River and lots of Mexicans etc. :o
One thing that jumped out was the fact that Yuma, population around 80,000 (About the same size as Bendigo), has 28,000 RV sites. Thats not a misprint, it's 28,000.
The northerners come down to the warmer desert climate during the winter and are the towns major source of income.
Boy! The Walker and Gopher traffic must be horrendous. :?:o:roll:
As we're staying in Phoenix for a couple of nights which is a little bigger than Adelaide I also did some surfing around the area. It has 200 gold Courses and more than 50 RV parks.
Phoenix, Scottsdale and surrounding suburbs also offers RV'ers 1000 free sites for up to 48 hours at various locations with coin in the slot power, free water, and free dump points.
Walmart has up to 12 free 18 hour overnight sites at each of it's store carparks. No facilities.
By the time we get there Mid May most RV's will probably have left to head north again as the temperatures will be getting pretty warm, around 30 - 36c.
We were in Phoenix 12 years ago and really enjoyed it. Jane Loves the shopping Malls and I just enjoy the cheap eats, especially the huge steaks and the cold (Watery ) beer. It's a lovely clean city with plenty to offer a tourist.
Cheers,
ozjohn. biggrin

PS> Our new van will be ready 2 weeks after we get back. Whoo! Whoo!

No I haven't, but the two reviews I've read weren't very complimentary, especially the fuel consumption.

There have been times when I have wished Australia wouldnt follow everything American.... Not this time! Wouldnt it be great to have so many RV sites available!

One RV park I've stayed at several times is "Lawson's Landing" at Dillon Beach, North of San Francisco at the entrance to Tomales Bay (last time in 2005). Can get cool and foggy there even in summer. Amenities are basic so you need to be self contained, I don't think they have any "hook ups" (equivalent to our powered sites), I've stayed there with friends who have permanent on-site "trailers". It's very pretty in that area and hard to believe it's only 50 miles from S.F. Handy to Napa/Sonoma wine country.

I like Northern California, especially away from the cities. USA is a hugely diverse nation and there's some awesome scenery there. I have met some really interesting and nice people there too.

Solar, genny, same as here.  My note about no "hook ups" refers only to the one I mentioned at Dillon Beach although could apply at some other places.  "Lawsons Landing" is also a sheep and cattle ranch right on the coast.
