If you are heading up to Darwin in the coming "Dry", you might want to turn right off the Stuart highway at Pine Creek. If you follow the directions to Grove Hill, it will take you past some of the old rail sidings which were still in use in the sixties. confuse It's been many many years since I have been there, but if you ask directions at the Grove Hill pub, which I thiink is still the only all steel pub in the country, you might be able to get to see the old Howley rail siding, and the WW2 prisoner of war camp. As a kid, I was fasinated by all the gear from WW2 that was scattered around the "Top End". Further North, turn off to the left at the Douglas river road, and you can follow the original army road that is still kept in reasonable repair. Road comes out just South of Adelaide River. Regards. Sounds great Pipes, I was up there mid last year and visited Pine Creek, wasn't aware of Grove Hill, maybe next time.

Regarding steel pubs we do have the Iron Clad pub in Marble Bar, WA, that area has a WW2 history as well with an old WW2 Airstrip etc.  Well worth visiting Marble Bar (in the south winter season) the drive in (all bitumen) and the "Choc Top" Hills are really picturesque.

are most of these tracks passible in your average 4wd say like toyota ute , or mazda ute 4wds??
my dream is to have my slide on camper on some thing like that and go on these tracks, and see stuff
you wouldnt see on the black stuff

The road from Pine Creek to Grove hill is well maintained gravel. Howley WW 2 prisoner of war camp is on private land. The original WW 2 Stuart highway, from Douglas Riv. road is sealed. Has lots of hills and single lane bridges.
