RE: Bananas

Predatory pricing is a strategy whereby large operators drop a price to well below cost and create a glut to price out smaller competitors. Once the competitor is pushed out they then raise their costs to not only cover the loss but to now freely engage in a bit of profiteering. It won't work if the commodity is in short supply as is the case here.

Now I'm getting confused Jim.  What I was talking about originally, was the same thing the Oil Companies do when the price goes up over-seas.
Regardless of the fact that the stock in hand has already been paid for , the price of fuel goes up straight away, [they've already paid for it at the old price].

According to Radio and TV reports, Banana Prices have already increased a lot, even though there is still a stockpile, which has been paid for already, before the Cyclone.  How can that be fair, or reasonable ?

Cheers,
Sheba.

For those of us who live in / around Brisbane and Ipswich will know it was next to impossible to by bread, bread products (eg flour or bread mixes) mil, long life, fresh, powdered during the week of the flood.

Our local milk supply (Pauls) was innundated, and now they are offering all Qld profits from their milk and some milk profits donated back to the Premiers flood appeal. .

A few days after Yasi hit, the price of bananas in our local WW had double, however they had an explanation (believe it or not) that they paid that price to help the bananas growing industry.

I will always, where possible, buy local / Qld / Australian, regardless of the price

Bananas were $1.98 a kilo in our local Safeway/Woolies today, even though they had a sign up saying the price was so high as they were paying the growers double the usual for having the devastating cylclones up there.
I think what had happened is they were at the end of that line as they were all getting a bit marked and the lady fingers were mixed in with the normal ones.
I bought 2 kilos and put half in the freezer.

Heard on the news this afternoon that the growers in Cyclone affected areas are able to sell the bananas off the fallen trees. At least they will get something back for their year's work

I wondered if they would be able to as they all looked good still wrapped in the blue plastic.

Personally I think if we express our own opinions, based on our personal experiences, we would be less confused than repeating what the media tells us.
As a former journo I've been disgusted recently by the crap they've reported, and somehow they never get around to correcting their misinformation, not to mention the poor quality of the writing.
Don't hang on their every word. Keep you tongue firmly in your cheeks and keep the skepticism radar cranked up to the max.
It's tragic that some of these jockey journo's feel the need to embellish the truth with some of the crap they've inflicted on the readers, viewers and listeners lately.
The disastrous bushfires, floods and cyclones around this country recently have affected everyone in one way or another. Even if it's just a tear rolling down the cheek as we observe the tragedies and the reactions of the people affected.
The looters and some of the businesses which have preyed on the hardship and suffering of the community need to be publicly disgraced and shamed.
Bananas in Coles in the Salisbury area are still less than $6.00 per kg, so far. Rockmelons are cheap now, $1.70 per melon, and they are very sweet. We just have to ride it out, to support the growers, if nothing else.
We Aussies have to stick together as we always do.
