just volounteered to help in the floods

I just put my name down my name to help in the Qld floods . I have a self contained vehicle and a few skills that might help, and am not doing a lot, so I hope that I am doing a good thing. Perhaps a few other nomads could also help.Volounteer Qld is the sight where you can sign up.Will post as I go.

You wouldn,t believe it- I started the generater, just in case, , and BANG! It blew up. Must be the humidility, which is very high up here.Bugga. I will probably buy a 2st one, as my outboard is a 2 stroke.Still have 2 inverters, one 600 watt and a 300w.We will have to wait and see.

Yes it is no good going where You are not Directly needed .
I am Deputy Captain of our Bush Fire Brigade & have Rescue skills etc -
I am on call - so there is no use adding to the problem by just going .
I got called yesterday & placed on stand-by .

Just heard that the Ipswich peak has been revised down - the Coles Store, Hogs Breath Cafe etc are all inundated, that's Brisbane Street - also there has been looting - low lifes! Mayor has said if he catches anyone he will use them as flood markers - my friend has been evacuated, had to leave a lot of stuff behind, is worried, but we can't get through to check it out for her, she doesn't know her neighbours, just moved there recently.
Take care

I am watching austar news, and you should see the pictures on the carnage! 10 dead and 90 missing! shocking to say the least. I feel a bit guilty sitting here, dry and safe.

As far as  know , the pub is fine but there is water on the road to the north and south, dropping very slowly. We should be able to get to Rocky later in the week. The road south of rocky is still flodded.

good on ya bill that's the spirit, we all can help in some way if not now but in the comming months this will be a long hard road to traverse for some i suspect. Me and the family are in Tas and will be trying to get back to our home in Bundy after being away for 7 weeks on the boat tomorrow. Fingers crossed we can get there, though will be a few days before we reach north nsw. not sure about Vic though? Oh yes our home is high and dry but it will be nice to get back to support friends and fellow Bundabergiens.

Good luck with your adventure Bill. You will find that you will find the work hard but the rewards great.
I spent nearly 6 months rebuilding fences after the Vic fires and the rewards are for both sides. You will not only great satisfaction from your efforts but you will experience great gratitude from the people that you help.
On the young members of our community I have found in times like this they seem to get lost. We had lots of school groups etc but the number of un employed you could count on one hand and we were told by CES that they can not MAKE them volunteer, not like us old buggers who seem to drag our old bones and get something done.
The donation of money is realy a waste of good money. Notice they only want money not goods so that gives a message. The best way to help is to volunteer where possible.
Regards
Brian

Welcome to the forum Beiffe... I agree with everything you said!

Its frustrating not being able to do much to help from here... we could offer a spare bed if we were closer.

I feel there must be good reason why "they" would prefer money to goods at this stage.  The logistics of handling goods donations by already over-stretched volunteer personel at this stage may perhaps, be one of them?  This situation may change over time.

I certainly commend Bill and any others who are volunteering, and I commend Brian's efforts in the bushfires, it's a great effort to do so, but whether to volunteer and/or donate is a purely personal decision.  The donations are being administered by the Red Cross and I feel sure we can have every confidence that organisation.

I'm unavailable to volunteer (health issues including a not fully healed (no pun intended) broken ankle).  I am available to donate and have done so.

Jim
