Ironing...........................

Its not something I do on a regular basis no  but sometimes it just has to be done!!!!!! therefore  I was wondering what most of you do.....are there irons for hire in most van park laundries or is it better to take one along on the trip ?

There are irons and ironing boards in the laundry and mostly are free to use.

We however take a small travelling iron with us for those rare times that ironing needs to be done.

Yes there are irons for hire in caravan park laundrys, BUT I've never used one, although I iron at home.

The criteria for choosing clothes to take with us is that they dont need ironing. I even have a "wrinkle" skirt to wear if need to dress up a bit. Its amazing how careful folding keeps things looking ok. smile

I have an iron on board. As I live in the van full time, I needed to iron work clothes, so paying to use an iron didn't seem very wise.
If you only iron once in a while I suppose the park's iron and board would do.
I have a thermal sheet thing which I just lay over the table and iron there. I learned to iron without a board when I was very young. Besides I don't have room for the board.
My clothes are mainly non-iron, but some special clothes get the once over on special occasions.

The rags I call fishing clothes will never see an iron lol.   Years ago management made me carry one of those little "travelling" irons on a backpacking trip through Europe.  Didnt use it once, it was just a weight in the bottom on the backpack.  Finished its short life as a weight in the bottom of a garbage can.

If it needs ironing, don't take it. I haven't ironed in years. One of my pet hates.
I did find one of those table top ironing boards at an op shop last year, got for a couple of dollars. Great when you need something flat to work on and will pack away in van in a small place.

We've been on the road nearly 2 years, and we iron our clothes just like we do at home - polos, shorts/trousers, hankies, pillow slips, tea towels..... Just because we live in a van I still like to look smart.

We started off expecting to use the park irons and boards, but within the first month bought an iron and a few months later a small board that fits neatly under the bed. We never had to pay to use a caravan park iron or board, but the irons were often hopeless and leaked water all over the clothes, and the boards were often badly covered or fixed to the ground or wall with poles in awkward places or just miles from the van so we were carrying clothes all over the park.

We only had one park in that time who weren't happy to supply an iron when requested, although sometimes they asked for a refundable deposit.

You iron pillowslips and teatowels???
I iron nothing at home or anywhere else. When I wash every top hangs on a coathanger on the line after a flick to iron out the creases. Everything else is folded neatly when it comes inside.
I have a neighbour like that, she irons absolutely everything. Yet her clothes look no different to mine and she is always busy, never has time to put her feet up.

Now Nicholstones, we're going to have to have a long chat.
While I carry an iron to iron the nice clothes, I certainly don't make work for myself.
My grandmother ironed everything, such as tea towels and pillow slips, but that was mainly to remove the last dampness from the clothes line. We lived in the Adelaide Hills.
I would never do it now. Just my nice clothes for a special occasion.
You obviously aren't getting it, this grey nomad thing. It's a lifestyle, not a traumatic, labour intensive experience. You need to get out more.
As a single mum at home I used to take ironing in for cash. I'd set up the board, the iron, the radio and my clothes rail and away I'd go.
I don't mind if I have a pile to get into, and not this "one item when required" racket.

We've been on the road over a year & never needed an iron yet. We just have clothes that don't require ironing & that includes our 'smart' clothes. As for ironing teatowels etc...rofl.gif

Sorry Nicolstones, I agree with CG.

At home, i only iron what I have to. On the raod, never. I only take clothes that can be hung and folded right from the line.

When I was first married, a zilllion years ago, I ironed hankies and pillow slips, but very quickly stopped that foolishness! biggrin

I know someone who not only irons pillow slips and hankies but the sheets too!!

Another acquantance irons everything that comes off the line, even undies!
Because her husband insists!!

Mind you, we all have our funny little habits!

When I hang the washing on the line, I have to hang all undies together, tops together, pants together... giggle.gif

I think the reason that I still iron at home is a hang-over from being an Army wife for 26 years. But I'm slowly getting over it!

I used to colour co-ordinate the pegs but have got over that after my kids started teasing me about it. And they don't make the packs multi coloured anymore.

We must have nice iron cloths we don't want to drop our stranded when we are on the road

I don't know how anyone could stand to use an unironed hanky, and pillowslips are ever so much nicer when they are ironed. It takes not much more than an hour a week to iron everything, you all must have very busy lives if you can't afford that.

Brickies, why should we drop our standards when we are on the road? That is the only place we are these days, I can understand things being different when travelling is something you do for a few weeks every now and then, but not when it is your life. Why should we be different people just because we live in a caravan instead of a house?

I totally agree it our home on the road and Mrs Brickie proud of her ironing and say the same thing 1 hour a week and the folding mini ironing board and iron not much to carry , we are not snobs but is nice to not have to lower your stranded when away from home has your time is your own , but if people don't want to iron their gear that's fine by me

Her Up Stairs loves ironing .. why else would she do it every monday?

So we have a small traveling iron that we carted all over Europe & as well a small ironing board under the bed, in case the urge comes apon her.

I can iron but choose not to .. It would be unkind of me to take that pleasure away from HUS.

Just like hanging out the washing.  Tried it once (35yrs ago) but got into trouble for not hanging undies on the inside line on the hills hoist & then mixing shirts with sox etc etc.

Recently solved the peg colour problem by buying all pink ones for the van's mini hills hoist!

Thoughtful aren't I?

Very thoughtful Cupie. That's how men generally get out of doing housework isn't it? By doing it badly?  wink.gif
