Never thought about caravan park managers, thanks for that.
I know on Kangaroo Island they have cages where you can leave you dog for the day. I think so anyway, thought I read it on here somewhere.
Somewhere I've always wanted to go.

You could also ask other pet owners wherever you are staying, if they will mind your dog and you will mind theirs.
In Longreach last year we left our dog at the local vet for the day, $10. while we went to the Hall of Fame. Well worth it.

Yes, had read here somewhere: I mind yours, you mind mine. I like that idea if others have dogs where you are staying and you both don't want to go to the same thing at the same time.

I was in touch with the KI tourist info centre and they put me onto the Doggy day care on the island, they were very nice. The 'you mind mine and I mind yours' is also a good option if you like the other people, I would probably only do that with someone I knew, otherwise the local vet sounds like a good idea as well as the park owners and tourist info. Seems there are a few options.

look at the notice board in caravan parks, some people who are longterm may mind dogs, also look in the laundry of caravan parks for more notices

I would think that local boarding kennels would also do it if they are not booked out but would probably have to pay the cost of a nights accomodation but its probably worth a try :)

Hi all,
I'm still in the planning stages for my big adventure and the sort of ideas posted here are just what I need. I've travelled quite a bit before (with dogs) but it's mostly been holidays with a deadline for back to work. Now I'm planning to retire in 17 months (but who's counting) and although I'm not concerned about being single again, I'll go nowhere without my 2 fourlegged companions. I noticed a thread about a weight limit for dogs in Ballina. Does that refer to a breed average? My 2 iggys SHOULD be only 6kg, but then I should be only 90kg. Middle age has found us!
Good to read that there are plenty of solo's who don't let their single state stop them from living their dream

My hubby and I are planning to sell our house this year and start travelling around Australia for several years to come. We have a dog and one of our concerns was leaving him if we needed to go somewhere. The info I am getting from this site is wonderful and I thank you all.

Theres been a great lot of suggestions hasn't there.

One thing I wonder. In the heat and you want to do a grocery shop, do you leave the dog in the vehicle, if you are solo and don't have the 2nd person to keep an eye on it.
Some councils fine people nowadays for leaving a dog in a hot car which is understandable. But how do you get around a small shop and shopping strip browse.
Punky is small enough to carry in a bag along a street but won't be able to take her into food shops.

With Mindy which is many years ago now, I left her in the car with a large bowl of water and the window open slightly. And was as quick as I could be.

I often see little dogs tied up to a post outside shops here in Echuca, that worries me as someone could steal it.

Wish I had the answer for you, but I wouldn't leave my dogs in the car for long, I only leave them in car if I can see them,
doesn't take long to get hot in the car, and I also wouldn't like to tie them up either in case someone took them or stray dog
attacked them? Luckily I'm not a big one for wanting to browse thru shops etc but if I had to do a big grocery shop or needed
to spend more time shopping for whatever reason I think I would have to find someone or somewhere to look after the dogs
for peace of mind so I could really relax.

My sister takes Jedda with her to shop. She uses a Dog Pram. I've got one, but haven't used it yet. Just like a Baby Stroller with 3 wheels. They fold up easily too.

I think they were between $150 & $200.

Sheba, can you take that into a grocery shop?

I love op shop browsing, can do that here as I leave Punky home. She's small enough to go into a shoulder bag but I am sure they would stop me at the door of a supermarket.

That's what I'm saying Marj. I have been with her when we've gone food shopping in Supermarkets, and even went and had a cup of Coffee in a Coffee shop. Most people don't look at you twice.
The Prams are exactly like some Childrens' Prams, so most people don't look at what is inside.

Mind you, Jedda lays there quietly, and the Pram is closed up, so you would have to be bending very close to see inside.

The few occasions any-one has noticed, they all think it's a brilliant idea.

My vehicle has little pop out windows on the spacecab that you can't get your hand in and I leave the main windows down about 2" to 3" as well as park in the shade. Have been able to leave the 'car' dog quite happy while I go shopping. The other dogs are in crates on the back, with a tarp over the top and the sides clipped out to allow the air through. Have had no trouble shopping for one or two hours.

A friend of mine has some security mesh fixed to the inside of her back windows so she can leave them down and the dogs are secure.

HW, found a great 'Vinnies' at Tenterfield and Glenn Innes, bought some great 'show' gear for $1 each and some rose coloured glass lightshades for $1 each as well.....love op shops.

I just watch the time of day when I go shopping - like early before its too hot. The tinies don't bark when I'm away so have been known to leave them in the caravan for a little while - 2 hours max in daytime. I took one in a carry bag and got kicked out of a shopping mall. Have a "dog mobile"I bought off the internet which looks a lot like a shopping trolley through Çatch of the Day". It was less than $80. Lasting well so far. That one you've shown looks fantastic. Tiny dogs need to be safe. I even take it when walking them around the streets at home. I can always shove them in quickly if a bigger dog is loose. Plus I carry my old Mum's folding walking stick...

I know what you mean Denninelli. I just don't take Molls out for walks anymore. Fortunately I have a large back yard and a walking track along the back fence. She gets all the exercise she needs trying to get to those big dogs walking past. However, that said she also doesn't get enough socialisation and is a bit agressive with other dogs. Hoping some travelling will help out in that direction. I am hoping to buy a van soon and will be putting in security screens on the windows so I can lock it but still let some air in. Also it will be well insulated with a fan for our comfort. I still would'nt like to leave her there too long though. Have taken her in my handbag, but get dirty looks even in places like Bunnings.
