Hi I am planning to sell up next year and hit the road I will not have a permanent address for vehicle rego, how or where do we register the vehicle. I know they are not keen on p.o.boxes If anyone has some answers I would appreciate them
I would assume that the State you live in..Would know....Of course, if it's the RTA or Vic Roads your likely to be on hold for ever, and be speaking to some one in Bombay...Ha Ha!

Hi Jimbo Thanks for your reply I live in qld but would prefer to register elsewhere when the time comes as I will have no permanent address Our (low tax state!!) charges bottom line $1100 for my small pan tech drivable on a car licence. I will be 63 next birthday in May so not eligible for the pensioner rebate. I really resent giving these wasters any more money.
Hi and welcome Pete, I've been on the road fulltime and have lived in van parks since 98. When I bought the van I registered it at the place I was parked at the time, WA. When I went on the road full time I just changed my address to a box number my daughter collected her mail at in SA, and she would forward my mail to me in prepaid mail bags I'd sent to her. It doesn't matter what state you're registered in, as long as you're registered and insured. Now I'm in SA full time I will probably change my rego to SA, and I will have to change my postal address eventually. Pick the state you want to register in, or where ever you're parked in, and go from there. Good luck and safe travels. Cheers Chris

One thought is to check out the roadworthy certificate requirements in each state (known as a "pink slip" in NSW). This may influence one's decision as it may be inconvenient to have to be in a particular state at around "roadworthy" (pink slip) time.
Unless you have no alternative (guilty as charged) you'd be mad to register anything in NSW. It's no coincidence that one rarely sees rental cars or fleet vehicles with NSW rego plates.
But don't you get good pensioner discount in NSW if you are eligible. Not even close to pension age my self so don't know for sure
There are pensioner discounts, not sure how generous but they may be. Obviously anyone eligible should check this before making any decision. I have an idea that it's only available for one vehicle per pensioner or pensioner couple.
My caravan costs $254 annually to register. I think it's about $35 -$40 in Victoria. Victorian GNs may be able to update this figure.
Our caravan registration in Victoria cost us $36.70 this year, with no discount of any sort. The patrol registration was $612.30. No annual roadworthy required for vehicles in Victoria, only at time of disposal.
Been travelling for over 4 years and we use a mates address in townsville when rego comes she emails me the bpay details i pay it then she forwards the sticker on to me, very easy but not everyone has someone they can trust completely i guess.
I believe NSW is the only state which insists on the "pink slip" every year at registration renewal time. In WA the inspection is only required when changing rego from former owner to a new woner. In my case I changed it from NSW to WA. The inspection mainly focussed on the gas connections and fittings, a little browse over the chassis etc and general condition of the van. It was all done on site by the local authorised agent in Broome. I'll probably be changing over to SA, but there's no put inspection here either, as far as I'm aware. NSW sure gets its pound of flesh from it's citizens. Yet they still charge at toll gates, supposedly contributing to the road maintenance budget. What a mixed up country we live in. Bring on national standards, but not the NSW standards.
