I was hoping this  subject may have reared it's Head before this.....I hope this is  allowed.  But I think Julian Assange's is a down right bloody Hero.......The Truth always Hurts...I have really enjoyed reading  about  this......So sad that some young women feel, that money is more important than the truth........In my opinion these Swedish females have set woman's credibility back to the  dark ages..It is way out under control.........

Sorry Jim, but how do you know that the females in question are not telling the Truth ?

Also, have you really thought about how many lives Julian may have endangered, and may still endanger, by releasing the said Secret Documents ?

Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Information are all very well, but they must be tempered with Common Sense [Imho],  otherwise there would be nothing but Panic, and Chaos.

We've already got more than enough unrest in the world, why make more.

Cheers,
Sheba.

My fault Jim. Have been at hospital all day, and not up with the very latest developments.  However that's still only one, and my other comments I believe, are still very relevant.

And I have Gay friends of both sexes, and being a Lesbian does not automatically mean you're a man-hater.  Far from it in a lot of cases.

You might just as well say all Gay men are woman-haters.

Cheers,
Sheba.

I'm not sure about the rape charges side of the story as none of us know except the people involved.
What worries me about wikileak is Has he endangered all of our lives by deciding to share secrets that may not have needed to be shared. Obviously some peoples opinions should be kept safe and secret not to endanger world peace.

The Yanks have got themselves to blame for this by allowing a very junior ranking private in their Army to have access to the information which he then passed on.

He has been arrested and I imagine will face serious charges over the leaks.

I believe they have now tightened up access to their intelligence at certain levels, which considering leaks and espionage they have had many times over you would think they would have learned by now.

Bit late closing the door after the horse has bolted, but I suppose better late than never.

By the way, some ex members of Wikileaks have formed a rival group that will be launching soon, called Open Leaks, See this newslink;

I don,t know if anybody has a military background, but loose lips sink ships.Its called reckless endangerment.Besides , if you give sensitive info to the enemy, it borders on treason! The idiot is putting lives of australian soldiers in jeopady, and everybody thinks he,s a hero.......He doesn,t care - he only wants the fame. You can disagree if you like , but you aren,t at the front line.The taliban must be laughing !I don,t care about the politicions, only the soldiers at the blunt end .The rape charges do seem trumped up.

I'm with you on this one Bill12. As far as I can see you don't go giving away your secrets to the enemy, it's risky, it's dangerous, and must be illegal.
Is he just wanting his 15 minutes of fame to the detriment of stability between the warring countries.

This is the bloke that started it all and should be dealt with severely (see link below) Wikileaks is a journo news service and was relaying the story, like many other news agencies would have done if they had the info given to them.

Freedom of speech is something democratic countries like Australia fought for and should be protected, like mushrooms we should not be kept in the dark and fed bull......t like we are a lot of robots that should be told nothing.

I agree we need to be more sensitive about defence matters, but then we should not be led up the garden path about them either. They say truth is the first casualty of war and this is certainly the case here, among the other political revelations.

If you want to blame somebody, blame this bloke and the US lax security access on these matters. Click on;

So you are telling me that if a journo said that I was a pedafile, whether it was true or not , 99 % of the world would believe it! A lot of journos think the world revolves around them , and they can print what they like, and get away with it. You cannot write what you like, you have to think of who and what are the consequences, or so I was led to believe. Julian doesn,t care who he hurts, just his 5 minutes of fame.

Hi Bill,

I am not defending Julian Assange or journo's, but I am defending freedom of speech and I agree that journo's have a responsibility in not reporting certain sensitive matters, especially if they concern national security.

As an ex ADF member of 20 years service who has also trained with and been trained by a major security organisation in anti-espionage and anti-sabotage matters, I can tell you I am appalled at the level of access given to this young soldier by the US Intelligence Service.

I do think we probably owe Julain Assange a debt for his exposing a security system that obviously needed tightening up and access to certain levels given accordingly.
Imagine if this had not been released and the leaks exposed and this young soldier decided to sell information to foreign powers, this soldier could have gone on for years causing untold damage to the security of all countries they deal with.

All countries affected by this including Australia but especially the US will have a good look at their systems of communication now and the material they send by those methods.

I feel very sorry for the King of Saudi Arabia, he will be a major target now of Muslim Terrorists. I do not believe that what has been released so far about operations in Iraq and Afghanistan would pose much of a threat to our troops and others over there, other than maybe being used for propaganda purposes.

Regards

        cryIf half of what Julian has released it just proves to me that the world is lied to and deceived by those in power for their own ends and not for the good of mankind.
We have a lot of egotistical people running the world.evileye

Hi Everyone,

Apologies for not spotting this topic earlier. I am closing this string as I feel it’s not really an appropriate subject. I appreciate that this is both a controversial and sensitive issue and everyone has their own point of view that they may feel passionately about.  However, I think that these kinds of subjects are best discussed in other arenas  – I’d like to keep this forum primarily as an inclusive and positive place to discuss travelling and caravanning.  Of course, there is always the opportunity to discuss a wider range of issues as well … but perhaps we should leave politics alone!
