Road conditions

Has anyone been on the road from Charters Towers to Hughenden to Winton in the last couple of days. We're heading out from Townsville in the morning not sure whether to go out through Mt Isa then Alice to Adelaide or down the west of Qld through Longreach etc. I know there are websites we can go on to get this info but i reckon its better to find out from someone who has just been there. Cheers.

Mate was finally able to get here yesterday from the west , he came B/hill Cobar Bourke Moree though , I don't know if this last system affected the north as much though.
Have a safe one , when & which way you go .

Don't know if you are still checking in, I did the west Qld route in May, if you haven't done that area before it is a real experience, especially Longreach/Winton.

The road between Hughendon and Winton is a good sealed road (development road I think) that is mostly two lanes with a couple of small stretches where it narrows to one (being upgraded to two), there had been a couple of small washaways when I went across, mosty where the cattle grids were, but still drivable, just don't hit them at speed. Like most of these roads, keep your speed down and watch out for possible hazards, I believe you will be ok, ask for conditions in a town before proceeding, most fuel stops will have some up to date info on the road ahead.

Someone mentioned Cobar, excellent family run caravan park there if you go through that way.

Happy travels,

I'm heading that way next week, well, over the next 2 weeks, taking my time between Cairns and SA.
I've spoken to a few travellers who've come that way and they say the road is good, and the weather hasn't affected it.
All we can do it keep checking with everyone we meet coming from the west, listen to the radio weather, watch the internet if there's signal, and then use common sense.
Like travelling anywhere, drive according to the conditions, and take it as it comes.
Safe and happy travels, and see you out there.
Keep a look out for THAT wheel cover.

Excellent Top Tourist caravan park at Barcaldine (reasonable tariff) if you go through that town CG and want a decent overnighter..........group ensuite showers & toilets, owner puts on scones and cupper around a campfire.........

New owners with good attitude !
