We have been using  Coles Home Brand Nappy Care Plus instead of the normal toilet chemicals for a number of years.   The active ingredient  is Sodium Percarbonate.   Other products containing this ingredient are also suitable.

Dissolve four table spoons of powder in 500ml of warm water and add one table spoon of eucalyptus oil.   Stir in well and add to the bottom tank only.   It will last a week if you a no solids policy, around four days if solids are involved.

It is much cheaper and the only smell is of gum trees.
