Hebel to Dirranbandi Road

Gday...
Yesterday we made our way from Lightning Ridge to St George QLD.
The road between Hebel and Dirranbandi is in very poor condition for a sealed highway.
Despite the effects of recent flooding that has impacted the surface, the repairs that have been done are coming to bits due to traffic damage. This is made a little worse as they have signs up saying "Rough Surface" but it doesn't really help, as the 'rough damage' differs each time. Sometimes it is just rippled bitumen and at other times it is road-wide and 2metres across and potholled.
Many times we had to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid the damaged road surface.
The shoulder on most of the road is also rough and sharp edged - not good if you have to drop the wheels off the edge for an oncoming truck.
Road is also like a roller coaster in most places.
On the up side, there are stretches where the road has been completely renewed and is quite good - widened as well.
Cheers

Julie & John

Sounds similar to the Developmential Hwy (Hwy 1 ) up the top end

worst road i've ever been on and they have the hide to call it a highway more like a goat track

cheers

Coyotte

ROADS , what do they do with the tax they collect from us "twice" on fuel ?, yes the more one travels on out back roads the more you wonder.. maybe the M5 needs to be bigger? its a joke . We need infrastructure in the out back big time. Not waiting till it falls apart or some one runs of the road and is hurt.. You carnt do anything with out money ha .no good have a surplus and no roads or anything. .Like haveing plenty in the bank and carring a swag on foot.. But thats how it is.worse luck.. Bobnbev

Know the road well. It was never designed for road-trains but carries them in large numbers freighting feral goats out to Cunnamulla I think. The road from St George to Cunnamulla is almost as bad.
That's one of the problems overnighting in Hebel, the trucks go through there all hours of the nite right beside the free camp area.
