Another Newbie

Hi Everybody, I've been reading this forum for quite a long time, but didnt join since we are still wannabes, didnt think I'd have much to contribute. Over the months I've learned heaps of helpful things from all your varied posts, and feel that its time I said a huge thank you! smile smile smile

So now I'm out of "Lurkerland" I have a burning question. Many of you are keen fishermen/women, how did you learn to catch fish???

Regards, Gert

Have no idea how to catch fish Gerty Dancer, but welcome. I am a newbie and a wannabe with big plans. You can learn so much from talking to others on here. The info I have gained has made it easier for me to make my decisions.

For me its been a life long thing, Faint recolection of fishing with my dad with a hand line in a 12 foot wooden boat with a 3 hp outboard motor. From there its just been a progression I suppose, joining fishing clubs at times to being the Tagging Officer for tasmania. My sugestion for a late fisher learner is to just talk to people that are fishing in the style you would like to learn. Havnt met a fisho yet that wont inpart his/her knowlegde to someone with genuine interest. Also go to the local fishing shops with an open mind, look and ask questions but dont get hooked up with all their hype.
Hope this has been a little helpcheers

you can small charter in most fishing towns or where there is a lake or river, that can teach you to tie knots to casting.

like blaze i have been fishing all my life and agree wholeheartedly with his advice i would loke to add that the very best way to quickly learn to catch fish is to have someone who KNOWS what they are doing show you. three best general rules i can offer is -

1. fish as light as you can for the fish you are targetting

2. fish the last two hours of the run up tide and first two hours of the run out (particularly if they fall at dawn and dusk

3. learn how to gather your own bait and use it live if at all possible

oh yeah and remember that 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish

Welcome to the forum Gert. Now fishing. I take a very scientific approach to this problem. I put the rod together, (surf) place reel on rod, thread line and attach catchy fish things on the end add bait (smelly) cast in and hope a fish commits suicide. Enjoy your caravanning and your fishing. Like most things in life the KISS principle is OK.

oh i had another brain wave.   cotact a few of your local fishing clubs, ask if they will take on a newbie, some will some wont, dont be put off, you will find one that will.   you can cut a lot of learning curves that way.   cheers pete
