My thought on this...what about if you have spent large dollars to get "on the road" then find out that there were heaps better ways to do what you have done............too late then.
Better to learn through others experience.
And generally people enjoy sharing their knowledge, especially once retired ...it's a good fuzzy feeling to assist folk to make a better/safer decision.
Sharing your knowledge/ experience is a positive decision to make.
It's very simple and extremely easy to be negative...it takes a bigger person to try and always be positive.

Cheers

Each day is a learning experience.  Sometimes we start off with what we think is the "Ants Pants" only to find that there is something a bit better or more suited to our situation.

I treat each day as if it was my last and live it to the full.   If tomorrow comes it is a bonus.

Learning by other's experiences is a really good way to go.  Take a walk around any campsite or van park, see what others have and how they use things and then decide if you can do the same or even improve on their idea.  Like someone said, the only stupid question is a question not asked.

If you never ask you will never find out.& dont be afraid to knock on a door with a question.

IT has been suggested many times hire first, ask people questions look at what others have got and what they are doing

It's a matter of personal choice and budget.
If you have the money to get the biggest and the best and the newest, go for it.
But there are options for the travellers on a budget, and biggest may not be "best".
Hiring is a great way of learning about yourselves and if you would enjoy more of this life.
Then you have to look at what cash you have, how long you want it to last, and how you want to spend it.
While you're on the road checking out the lifestyle in your rented rig, ask questions, browse the parks, and if you see something which grabs your attention, just politely approach the folks and ask them all the silly questions you can think of.
They're never silly questions if you think the answer will help you enjoy this lifestyle as economically and safely as you can.
It's then a matter of personal choice of what you think will suit your travelling style.
Check out the caravan and motorhome shows as well. Lots of choices in one spot, with lots of salesmen with informative brochures. You can then go home and think about everything you've seen, and maybe go back on a second day to clear the fog of confusing choices.
Good luck.
