Heading for Wilpena

Hi Folks,
We are new to this lark and our first trip is aimed at getting us from Sydney to The Flinders and back in 16 days with  a few days in Broken Hill. We have a sedan and caravan and would be most interested in any suggestions as to must do's, must avoid's, free camping and special spots along the way.
We are heading out around the end of April with strict instructions to be back for mother's day.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Silverton Pub with the mad max car is worth a side trip out of BH.
Burra gorge is a good free camp, Alligator Gorge is well worth a visit, back along the Murray heaps of free camps all the way along it.

Arkaroola Caravan Park was rather grotty (but ok if you're not fussy) when I was there a few years back (2006). It may be better now.

Rawnsley Park was nice, particularly if you don't need power as there are some nice unpowered camp sites. (Powered campsites are available there)

G'day Buster and welcome to the forum!

Broken hill and silverton is well worth a stopover but be ready for the dust, heat and flys, as has been said the Murray is full of great camp spots and Burra creek gorge between Morgan and Burra is always a good one

as you get closer to the finders there are many great camp spots which are free, there is the goyders line camp just out of melrose and for a small charge the melrose campground with loo's and showers and dump points (setup by the cmca),

then at quorn there is the dutchmans stern conservation park, a very good free campground, and on to hawker with many great camps around there, then continue to Rawnsley park which sits under the magnificent Rawnsley bluff, power or non power is available there or continue along until you come across a parking bay on your left just back from the national park entrance, you can camp in there for free

continue on to wilpena pound wander around for free (fuel, water, gas, diesel and supplies can all be gained here) as well as a camp ground power or non power, you may also wish to camp in some low cost ones amongst the finders ranges which can be accessed by payment and directions from the info center at the wilpena pound info office

continue to blinman, free camp anywhere here, then on to arkaroola, very dry and dusty but well worth a look, come back through copley and taste the magnificent pies and pastys on offer

grab a copy of "camps Australia wide" found here http://www.campsaustraliawide.com/......you will find this invaluable

this area is my backyard and there is not much I dont know about it, if I can be of any assistance please give me a yell, privately or publicly

just one other thing, if you have the time shoot across to lake eyre, it is becoming wet again, just check the road cons before you head over there though

Hi Buster....  We stayed at Rawnsley 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. Restaurant is very pricey.   The park provides a map of interesting places to visit as a day trip, it is very well done with thorough directions to about 20 or so places.   We stopped at the Parachilna Pub for lunch, great meal!.    If you get a chance head to Farina, that's an interesting spot too!       Also, near the Blinman Pub is Talc Alf's place, hard to explain but I recommend a visit.   When at Quorn we went on the train at the Pichi Richi Railway, good half day trip.   We loved Wilpena Pound, some great walks to do there.       Enjoy!!
