finances and retirement

We plan to retire in 3 years and spend our time on the road.

I am curious to know what sort of budgets people have  for their travelling.

We own our home and have no debts and some super (but not a lot) I am not looking at selling our home, may rent it but more than likely get it house sat as I dont want to have to pack everything up. Was also considering joining a house swap so other folks can use our home while we are not there.

Look forward to hearing your replies.

This was discussed not long ago, see thread
http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=51933&p=3&topicID=33679825

Everyone is different so  costs will vary.
We did just over 6 months on $72 a day average without skimping on anything. We met a lot of people doing it on the pension, they just holed up at a pleasant campsite for a few days if running short of a quid.

Do you intend to free camp or stay in  caravan parks , drive lots of KM per week, both of these items will be your biggest expense.
We start our wanderings in 3 weeks and have budgeted for $600 per week, some weeks we may spend more others less.
Hope this helps

Hi Caron,
This is our system, may not suit all but it is the way we see it.

selling up , last resort as it is very hard to get back into the market place later if you wish,[ unless money is not a problem].
You need to consider how & where you want to live when you finish travelling.ei, your home or in a c/van in a c/park.
its good to have a base to return to for time out, to service & maintain the rig.

We have a single lady, no kids or pets who house sits for us on a long term bases.
It puts her in walking distance of her work so suits her fine. All she has to do is keep the lawn done,we cover all other costs, its no different to being there our selves in that way.

Travell costs?....its up to you & what you want .
Caravan parks, dinning out etc etc, this is where you will pay.
If you are happy to do as much free camping as possible,do your own meals etc then that part is not much different to being at home as you are having the same types of meals ,may be a few nights in parks where you need to.

In doing it this way your main costs are the running & maintaince of your car/caravan/motor home that you are travelling in which in turn is goverened by the distance & time you want to be away for.

This is our thoughts on the matter, but it is up to each & every one to make their own choice based on their personal requirements & finances.
Just consider all aspects, think it through & you will come up with a plan.

See you on the road.

Cheers.

Hi Caron,
As justcruisin01 said we to do not want to sell the house, as we will need somewhere to live when finished traveling. the cost is up to you as to how much you want to spend spend a night in a C.P and you spend 25+ stay at the showgrounds $5 + free camp and it's free, there are lots of way to spend your money on the road and at the same time lots of ways to save it, It's all up to the indivdual as to what they want.
