Motorhome and Caravan Insurance

What sort of prices are you paying for insuring motorhomes and caravans, and are there any insurance companies that are fair to Grey Nomads that can be recommended. I am just trying to find out what we will be up for when we take the big jump.

I got quotes from about four companies for my motorhome and APIA was nearly half the price of the next cheapest and three times cheaper than the dearest, the extra benefits were worthwhile too.

We use APIA for ALL our Insurances.  Some are cheaper, some are a tad dearer but in the long run don't work out much different.

One of the benefits to us is that you can pay it by the month and not have to pay for the priviledge.  I know GIO put a surcharge on your premium if you pay by the month.

You can also opt for a no excess on some of the policies with APIA or choose to pay an excess and reduce the premium.

Works for us.

We have caravan & Car comprehensive Insurance, third party car Insurance & road service with NRMA & paying $447 for the caravan. Out of curiosity I just did an online quote with APIA & they were $477 though I have no other insurance with them which makes a difference & they also had no listing for brandless vans as ours is a home made one so I picked a Jayco equivalent.

Joe there are a hell of a lot of insurance companies out there and they are all not the same, I would look at an insurance broker but also read just what the policy entails, some offer new for old others don't, some have a depreciation clause written into the fine print and others have distance restrictions

I looked at Apia and found they were one of the dearest on the market, I am with CUMIS and have had two claims and found they were terrific, all settled within 48 hours

Just what Dave said it what happen when you have a claim that counts , some are good at selling and no good at settling

Be aware that you get what you pay for.
Some of the lesser lights and underwriting agencies are what we used to call
"claims made" underwriters. In other words they happily take your money with cheap
premiums, but go thru you with a fine tooth comb, if you make a claim.

Hi Joebee,I saw an article on caravan world.com.au when surfing last night which gives some background to caravan insurance and lists several companies that in the writers opinion do offer good policies and gives the pros and cons of each..fairly basic stuff but may be of assistance..obviously there are wiser ones than I here who will offer their support but for what it's worth just click on news and reviews

We have had every thing covered with NRMA for many years .
When I had to give the work away we ckecked apia & many others that were offering cheaper rates to seniors & pensioners etc , none even came close to what we had .
Their tactic was to start deleating sections of the coverage ,ei, flood if not in a flood zone etc just to make their fees comparible .Joke Joke .
The mutible policy discount helps as well .

I have the van insured with Caravan Insurance.
When I first insured with them while I was in Broome I had to show photos of tie-downs used in cyclone prone areas. All good.
Now I'm on the road I'm still insured with them and just advise where I am, if I stay for any length of time.
The awning on the roller attached to the van is insured as part of the van. The annexe walls are insured seperately.
I haven't had to claim yet, but because I've kept in contact I am confident I wouldn't have any probs.
I insured the landcruiser with RAC WA, but because my postal address is now SA, I had to find a national comprehensive insurer, which I had to use, and was very happy with the response and the service. It's all good.

I just checked NRMA insurance online and couldn't find a comprehensive policy for motorhomes... only cars, caravans and trailers. Does anyone with a self-contained motorhome have insurance with NRMA?

I have been with NRMA for all my polices except one for years and the multi policy discount helps a lot. As I will be cancelling my home and contents and building insurance ( cause I'm selling up) I decided to hunt around for insurance for the XTrail I have just bought and about 8 or 9 I researched all came within reasonable cooee of NRMA so I think I'll just stay with them. Even though I get 3 yrs roadside assistance with Nissan I will only cut my NRMA roadside down to the basic one instead of premium so I can still get member benefits.
