Ive just joined the site as you can see and am enjoying reading some of the wonderful stories, ive travelled all thru the middle of australia and from the bottom to the top end with a crew of four wheel drivers at the time and a jayco swan ,but since then i have moved married and am keen to do the travel again alas we own our own vacuum excavation business and cant get away for a while prob looking at in five years buying bus or doing something like that and giving it all up here in the lovely glasshouse mountains ,im a very very keen fisher and love to go barra fishing have been to the limmen bight, weipa several times to a destination called janie creek off of mapoon ,and heaps of other places.
My husband hasnt seen any of them places and im itching to get him out there so he can at least get a taste of it i reckon there will be no going back so plan is to buy an outback subaru with a fold out tent on roof and try to get himaway for at least three weeks for a break and see how we go wish me luck ???.
HI to you both, how would you get on with the roof top tent, I had a look at one of those things at the yorke peninsula field days and dreamt of a nissan patrol with one on top but then the thoughts of a midnight roll and sudden ascent filled my mind with dread!
I went around the corner and caught up with John Flavel, he used to live in crystal brook but has now moved to adelaide (I think) he produces these "slide on" camper units and I thought thats the baby for me, I just gotta convince the dragon that it's in our best interest
oh well the dream continues, we also love the barra fishing and have been lucky enough to have chased them in similar areas to you
Dave I had a Open Sky rooftop tent on my CRUISER. It was great till all my aches and pains started . So I had to sell. Got the same money for it that I payed.

but yeah canvas is no good when old Arthur rightus comes a knockin, I hear where you're comin from there! I've got rheumatoid arthritis in all my joints and first thing in the morning is murder getting them going
yes i sure do love the cape in fact i love practically any place that is outback or bush ,i just love getting away i love waterfalls bush and fishing ,nothing like a fresh sal****er barra and some huge mudcrabs to go with it.
oh and sorry no we havent purchased the tent on rooftop thing as of yet been doing a lot of research on different types the onewith the ladder inside of the tent is the go so you sort of have a kind of tent round the outside as well as just the tent up top if that makes sense as someof them have a ladder that just leads to straight outside?.
i dont like that idea ,the one we are lookin at kind of has an apron tent that goes round the end of the tent and so you have a small room where you can change etc, its just a start so we can go away some place and experience it.
Hello all, I bought myself an Oz-Tent, it only takes 30 seconds to put up. Really. And all of it on Terra Firma. Good for camping for a few days getting into the rougher spots, where the caravan wont go. A bit exy, yes, but IMHO worth every cent. Regards to all Frank
Hi Della Frank just beat me to it. When I first thought about travelling Oz, my first thought was a Forester, and Oz-tent. Then I listened to other people. Got something [I did get the Forester,] I never used, and finally sold everything else when I got the Hi-ace. Still considering the Oz-tent for a second room when stopped for any length of time. They are a brilliant concept.

I;m with you Nomad, the oz tent is a great concept. I just have a basic van with my bed set up permantly in the van and use the oz tent as an extra room to set my table up and eat in. The only drawback that i find is that it is a bit on the heavy side to carry, But true it only takes about 30 seconds to erect and in about five or ten minutes i can have the camp all set up and be drinking a cuppa.
