RE: Need GNs Advice

okay I had five minutes when the navigater took over so I rang the r.s.p.c.a. in adelaide about taking animals with you (phone is tax deductable)

the lovely girlie at the other end said,........................................................................... "you obviously care and love your animal very much so the answer to that is absolutely, take him with you, we really enjoy seeing the animals out and about full time with their owners, be sure to restrain them in the vehicle and give them plenty of water on long trips, we have no objection to you taking a travelling companion along, in fact we encourage it"

as for the doggy enjoying it, take a look at their eyes, they are smiling, they have a ball!

Just as well that dog has a bone in its mouth. It's the only way I could work out which was the front end.
Cute, but high maintenance?
The only time I've been annoyed by park neighbours and their dogs was when the 2 Malteesers yapped constantly inside the van which mum and dad human were outside or away from the van.
Generally speaking I think people who travel with dogs are well-mannered and considerate of their neighbours.
One of thest pet gadgets I've seen was a portable pen. The dogs were controlled but not on leash, they were in the shade partly under the awning with food and water. They were on leash when mum and dad human took the dogs walkies. Because the dogs could see around them they weren't frustrated or stressed by being out of sight of their owners.

So there you have it DaveO........Ducky comes along on the next trip??

I have no doubt that there are some pet owners out there who are just as Martin described..Then again there are parents out there who are just like that as well, but we don't ban kids..............maybe we should!!

We shouldn't lump everyone together but we tend to. Most pet owners try very hard to do the right thing, unfortunately there is always a minority.....as in all other things.

Even though you talk crap Martin.......you are entitled to your opinion :) :)

I honestly have yet to come across a bad one, a barking dog only barks at something that he percieves to be wrong once that is fixed all is well,

after all what about the drongoe who just sits and stares at you in c/parks, I find that more annoying or the peanut who has the telly too loud or lights on all hours of the night

those that congregate around our camps are mostly animal lovers and I find those to be the best of folks

yes ones opinion is ones domain but I dont think an attitude like that is the way to win freinds and influence people, certainly didnt impress me, but I'm a die hard animal lover!

Dogs are much easier to control than kids too.   Kids do a zillion times more damage than dogs will ever do.

At least dogs don't do their business in your water tank.........thankfully never happend to me but to an unfortunate other GN.

Parents think the "big back yard and playground" is a free for all and let the kids run feral and unsupervised.
They get up to mischief in the amenities blocks, ride their bikes and create havoc around other campers and intrude everywhere with no manners whatsoever.
Where are the parents? Sipping the bevvy of choice, fagging away chatting with anyone who's game enough to mix with them - just once.
They expect the other folk to put up with "they're only being kids" but if someone chats the kids about their bad behaviour the parents become confrontational.
There's never any excuse for bad, anti-social behaviour from kids or grown ups.

You've done it now Ducky, the Political Correctness Police will be knocking on your door any tic of the clock.

Word of advice, keep the back door unlocked, that is unless you have a hidey hole somewhere nice, well stocked with Mangos of course.

Hi Martin

I was wondering about something.

When you see a dog lick itself do you get disgusted? Is that because your jealous?

The truth is fella women and cats will do what they please and dogs and men should relax and get used to that idea.

Thank you one and all- sincerely for all your honest contributions. I apologise for what seems to be a hornets nest. The subject is very personal, I suppose. Simply this. We own a dog. My husband owns a dog, I therefore by default own a dog. He adores the dog, I love the dog with certain reservations and rules. Hubby needs to be trained in these rules- not necessarily the dog. If I can't get Hubby to co-operate with these rules ie dog not sleeping on our bed and feeding him at the table. Then and only then I reconsider if travelling with them both in my retirement and enjoying it as WE had planned before we had the dog.
I feel I can't be fairer than that.
I believe every body has personal likes & dislikes, I don't like my house smelling of dog- a caravan is so small and confined, how can it not get doggy odour all through it-Honestly.
The same as people don't like their house smelling of cigarettes, no different except one you can throw away- The cigarette! But the other you can't the pet. Both cause the same problem of odours not sickness.
We are both in our sixties have reared 4 daughters and have 9 grandchildren and both have been married twice- we have been married 33 years we have managed many things in our lives together, but it seems we have finally met a stumbling block after all these hard years. A DOG! So sad.
WE HAD A DREAM-THE DOG HAS SPOILT IT-HUBBY CHOOSES THE DOG- I LOST.
Thanks all for your advice, I appreciate it. Cheers Dawn
PS Disco Duck I don't care if the dog likes sleeping with me- its MY bed- He should be in HIS OWN!

I was afraid that this may be the outcome Dawn, some responses were way over the top

please let me apoligise for the inevitable outcome but it is a very highly controversial subject

you are correct in that it is YOUR life and your choice in the way it is to be shared, I dont agree with the dog on the bed or inside at all times but hundreds do, each to his/her own

I would suggest a bath for the dog on a regular basis, if in a van then once a week would be in order and have him outside more than inside

please talk it over with hubby and tell him your concerns, just tell it like it is, the dream should not end because of an animal, be sure and tell hubby this, there simply MUST be a solution,

try hot tongue and cold shoulder serves for the next month until he yields, works on me, nag, nag, nag and nag some more until he see's the error of his ways

do not go quietly into the night,

tears often work, (hint, keep an onion handy) has me in the dragons palm quicksmart as soon as the first one falls. one tear and I'm a wreck

please dont let it end here, talking is the key, communication and co-operation at all times is the goal for all of lifes enjoyment

now rear up and go get em, your life, your bloody choices!! make him see it!!

you know how to get around him after 33 years, put it to good use,

keep us up to date

Oh dear....Well let me be the first to advise that NSW is introducing legislation to "liberalise" where you can and may not take a dog, cat or other domestic animals.
This legislation will allow owners of busnesses to make up their own minds. Up till now "Dog Control" in NSW has been under the watchfull eye of local councils who have some pretty bizzare rules and their power under this legislation will be stripped away ( Oh there must be a foil wrapped god somewhere!!!!)
So to anyone who does not like dogs at the beach, doing the shopping, and eating with their owners at Al Fresco eateries TOUGH TITTIES!!!!!

I love cats and dogs but unfortunately we aren't able to have one in our situation.

I have no objection to animals being with their owners ANYWHERE.  It's just unfortunate that a fair proportion of said owners don't take control or responsibility for their animals which in turn makes it hard for those who do.

Also there is a time and place for animals and also unfortunately some owners don't realise this and take their animals to places that cause distress to the animals and to other people at that particular venue.

Dawn, it's such a pity after all those years that one dog could cause such a problem.
Surely your other half can understand what you're trying to say. I'm sure you would have discussed this before now.
It's probably in the best interest of both of you to reach an agreement before you leave home. You're not asking him to dump the dog, just to employ some doggy etiquette. It's not unreasonable.
If he can undersand and respect your perspective it should sort itself out fairly, with both of you being happy. Ultimately your feelings should take priority over the dog with him. I could be wrong.

Sorry for being so sensitive about your reply, DiscoDuck. It is causing me a lot of agonising each day and as I am trying to organise everything so as we retire smoothly- if you know what I mean.
This one small thing I don't seem to be in control of. Selling up our two houses at end of financial year so it is all ok, getting a ABN each, organising our Super to a pension, looking for a caravan and tow vehicle and trying to keep hubby in line with the budget is starting to play on my nerves if you know what I mean.
I am also working fulltime at the moment, managing a small transport company and the boss has decided because I am leaving he will also retire and sell up the business. Now I am dealing with that as well.
Oh Boy! I just realised why I am raving! Too much on my plate!
Time to sit back, allocate & prioritise. Thanks all we will get there- eventually! Cheers Dawn
I am still alive & I have a future! Many haven't! I should be gtateful!
