Ticks

Hi all

I am inspired by your comments and caring on this forum.

I am an avid  bush camper in a pop-top hiace.

To date I have been travelling with a friend, but am keen to do a few trips on my own.

I am concerned about what I would do on my own if something went wrong. It might be something simple like a tick latching on  my back, feeling unwell, spraining and ankle,  or perhaps something more serious

I look forward to hearing how as experienced solo travellers manage in these situations.

Excited but nervous

ZedJay

Welcome to the forums Zedjay.

My advice to you is to start off with some short trips and as you gain experience, your confidence will grow and you will realise that your worries are mostly unfounded.

In all my years of travelling and camping..............I never had a tick attach itself to me. A few weeks without a shower and NOTHING will touch you. Rolly can attest to that.
If you sprain an ankle..............sit around and drink beer till it gets better. Could be a happy couple of days.

Don't worry till it happens................take care to ensure it doesn't happen!!

Go and enjoy this wonderful country!!

As Mr Duck said...start with smaller trips.

Also do a first aid course! Everybody should " know what to do"! And carry a very well-stocked first aid kit, plus spares for your vehicle.

Camp in places where  there are other people.  If ever you have any either minor or serious problems its amazing how kind other travellers can be. The only time I was a bit nervous was when we were many k's away from anybody. It was a lovely spot, but it makes one careful.

Enjoy your travels, and welcome to the forum  smile

I left a very large comment, as usual, on the solo section, basically reiterating the above comments.

Not so, DD.

You seem to have little education re. blow flies, bush flies, bar flies etc.

They'll all put the bite on you, no matter how down-at-heel and lacking in the essentials of life and basic hygiene you are.

4 weeks in the bush with a under-funded and logistically challenged geological team attests to that.

If it hadn't been for the expensive looking vehicles and trailers we turned up in, (all hired, of course) I think the pub owner would have refused us lodgings on the basis of the huge distances that a decontamination team would have had to travel.

On the other hand, that's maybe why the ablutions were in a separate shed out the back.

I have a really good method of extracting ticks. Take a length of cotton, fishing line even dental floss and tie a figure 8 knot around it as close to the skin as possible then simply pull the tick out

Hi Zedjay. Welcome from us as well. Those naughty boys WILL keep you entertained.Know a little bit about ticks. Before you venture too far.... go to your Dr and ask mfor a script for CYDECTIN. Now , before anyone starts jumping up and down.....I KNOW IT'S A CATTLE DIP.....OK. We have done our share of travels and would NOT travel without them. A tick can kill. One small, and I mean very small pill would save you. Most people take precautions in the way of first aid etc and that as it should be, but very rarely does one think of the dangers of ticks. The area around St George,Qld, Lightning Ridge, NSW, is lousy with them. Not the big "cattle tick" but tiny tiny tiny little ones. If you are unlucky to be bitten...one tablet makes it drop off and stay in your system {safely} and repels others from sucking on you. I do know from experience, so next time you visit the Dr. ask him... In the meantime ..... just enjoy the banter from "the Guys".

Banter DellieMay.......did you say Banter ?? Frankly, I'm shocked!! I am also very disappointed........I have never been a witness to any of that sort of behaviour on here!! Ibbo will have something to say about this I'm sure.

You can correct this mistake by sending everyone 20 dollars (small unmarked bills).....................or you have to have a front seat view of the video of Ibbo putting his underpants on!!

Choice is yours!!

Shame on you DellieMay

Hi Basil.
Have you ever done that ?   We were always told as children, NEVER just pull a tick to get rid of it.
Reason ?     They leave their heads behind, and you wind up with a very nasty infection.

Kerosene will make them wriggle out and drop off.

I have seen people with infections after picking them off with tweezers, or just pulling them off with fingers. Not nice at all.

Cheers,
xina.

yep tried it and it worked well pulled the head out and all. Still nasty wound as the venom from the tick makes the area very sore and inflamed. Another way is to put some metho on the tick and set fire to it....

When we lived at North Head in Sydney, my kids often had ticks.  Other mothers told me to use very narrow pointed tweezers to get right down under the body as far as possible then pull. I applied antiseptic afterwards. It worked, with no infections, but I think it might be that the ticks hadnt been on long enough to insert their head deeply. Never knew you shouldnt pull them out! confuse

For leeches, on the other hand, theres lotsa remedies. Salt, metho, kero, even a lighted match! but how ever you get them to drop off the wound bleeds very generously afterwards.  bleh
