Great Ocean Road

Wow just got to Tauquay after coming up the Great Ocean road  What a cool drive ,I was really impressed with the sights.
I was all most put off by another caravaner at Warrnambool saying don,t take your van over it as it is pot holed and to narrow with no were to pass or be passed.
I ignored him and I am glad I did ,great road great view plenty of passing spots or places to pull over and let cars go .Found the Loch Ard gorge more impressive than the 12 Apostles well worth a couple of hours.Bells Beach ,Apollo Bay and Port Campbell all great.
I have only one new dislike and that is Vans with sliding doors at 1 o,oclock in the morning.
hey but don,t let anyone  try and talk you out of the drive.Just Greatsmile

Gotta agree Whoppa............what a great piece of Australia. I think that whole coastline is just so scenic and I have been fortunate enough to travel it many times. I always seem to find something new each time.

The last time we were there was about 3 years ago and the Apostles were very close to losing another member. I think that will bring it down to nine. Just eroding away.

Safe travels mate

Gawd luv a duck and strike me pink !!! What do some people want ? 4 lane divided highways
everywhere that they want to go.
The Great Ocean Road itself is a monument to and built by Aussie ex servicemen from the first world war and is to be admired just as much as the other beautiful sights that entire area has to offer.
Took me 10 days to do the G.O.R last year and still missed half of it. Going back soon to do it all again.

(whoops. no offence to you Ducky, anyone who loves Aussie bush poetry as much as you do, is already held in great esteem by those above)

evileyeevileyeevileye   Hi Whoppa.  We done the Ocean Rd earlier this year plus the inland area from Appolo Bay .

Its just gotta be up  there as one of the best .

Also it just goes to show that because some one else did not like the road, you have to make up your own mind about where you go.

Their lose , your gain .smilesmilesmile

"Good road" is open to interpretation, obviously.
I towed around there early last year and was very impressed with the condition of the road, from a vanner's point of view. I did most of it in third and second gear, up hill and down dale, and despite being by myself I managed to pull into several lookouts and enjoy the views.
It was a long day, but it wasn't because of the conditon of the road. It was worth it.
I wonder what they'd say about NSW and Qld roads?

Those damned whizz bangs - the bane of caravan parks. It's a very lucrative business obviously by the numbers on the road, but that bloody noise!

Do you still have the hair to blow around Ibbo or is that why you sold the Capri ?? :) :)

We drove it this year but also did the chopper flight out of the 12 Apostles back to the Bay of Islands.  Do yourself a favour and spend some of Kevies stimulus money, it was fantastic.  Also ask them to give you the low level flight back to the 12 Apostles.

The GOR. What a place to visit. We have travelled it many times most of them with interstate and overseas visitors. Starting from Torquay if you want there is Bells Beach of surfing fame along to Lorne to Apollo Bay the scenery is fantastic. We kept our van there for a year in the 80's. After Apollo there are many things to stop and explore, Cape Otway lighthouse, a wonderful bit of rainforest which name escapes me but is on the side of the road. , Somewhere around Lavers Hill from memory.Take it right through to Warrnambool and stay there for some great exploring including Flagstaff Hill. GOR a MUST DO in my opinion.

we have had the great honour of driving the great ocean road three times now including the "backblocks" we stayed at the lavers hill pub, had a great meal and the powered site cost us nothing, as well as a freeby about 20 kms west of it

I think it is nothing short of a privilige to be allowed on that "special" highway after it took so many of our returned diggers to build it, and all done by hand, horse and cart

we took the heli flight around the apostriphies, though they are a dying breed

Dave, i always thought a "whizz-bang" was something really good! Any way what happened to "live and let live". You can whizz your bangs as much as you like and I will tap dance on my chipboard floor to my hearts content. Gee I'm felling warm and fuzzy now!!!

Did the GOR in February this year.  One of the best trips we have ever done.  Took our time and did a chopper flight - low level - our of Port Campbell.  One of the most fantastic things I have ever done.

Speaking of sliding doors, take pity on us at the moment.  In Coral Coast VanPark in Townsville and we have one to the right of us and one to the left of us and one at the rear.

Talk about bang whallop crash at 1am try 2.30am, 3.35am and 4.10am.  Someone or all of them must have a very weak bladder me thinks.

Thats not a good position to be in Ma. I always take earplugs for those horrible nights. I am not a big fan of them but on such occasions, they are priceless. smile

Hi Ma,
I was conscious of the noise my sliding door made from the first night . I quickly solved that problem by getting [as soon as possible, ] a container with a lid, which I take to the nearest public toilets in the morning. They are never usually far away.
Perhaps you could suggest this to your neighbours. They may just not have thought of such a solution.
Cheers,
xina.

Yes we loved the GOR too. The only scary thing we found was on the road to the Cape Otway Lighthouse.... tourists from overseas (NOT GN's!) had spotted a koala in the trees over the road and stopped right in the middle of the road.  They were taking photos, leaving all their car doors wide open! Good test of our brakes!

Its a great area, want to do it again.

Just getting back to the sliding doors on campervans. We had a Toyota Hi Ace Camper and at first we had the bloody noise thing.Met another couple with the same type of van. They showed us how to open and shut the sliding door with minimal noise.Simply push against the door when opening or closing same, worked a treat.Cheers.Ibbo.

Must be something wrong with mine Ibbo. Just tried that, and it makes as much noise as when I don't push against it. Any ideas?

Lubricate the bearings that carry the door , also check there condition as a rough bearing  noise will echo through the vehicle  & clean the grit from the track where these bearings run .

Won;t stop all the noise  but sure helps

My pet hate as well ashamed.

Great day for the GOR. The weather was glorious and the sea was glistening. Sat at a park having lunch while the 4 year old granddaughter played and sang as we pushed her on the swin g. All the while we kept half an eye on the road watching the 4X4s with the vans following behind. Bring on next year when we take to the road again. (sigh, sigh, dream, plan, sigh)
