There are ways to persuade folk to behave well without telling them lies and fictitious tales of divine retribution and by presenting them with false ideas of heaven and hell.

G'day Rolly,

We were not subjected to lies and fictitious tales of divine retribution, nor were we subjected to religious dogma, we were basically taught the Christian way of life, "to do unto others as you would have them do unto you",  to treat others with the same respect you expected from them, nor were we presented with false ideas of heaven and hell or eternal damnation.  We were presented with a set of standards on how to live our life and to treat other people.

I am in no way attempting to convince you that there is a deity of any description, I do not know if there is or not, I am simply explaining that the lessons we were taught has helped myself and some of the other students I am still in contact with to respect other peoples feelings and their property, a lesson many of our young today could do well to learn.

As far as your search for some solid evidence of a God or Gods is concerned I wish you the very best of luck, I have searched for years and so far no one has come back to confirm or deny the existence of any Deity.

Regards
John

That's a loaded question in this context, Basil, but, for what it's worth, I'm a "Born Again Bachelor."

Well I only have this to say.

I don't give a used tinkers dam on what ones religious beliefs are though I do feel for those who take an extreme line either way but it does not take much research to see that 99.9% of all wars and conflict have at their roots conflicting religious beliefs.

Challenge for you all, find a war that did not have differing religious beliefs as the root cause and tell me why the Battle of Culloden was important....

Yes the extreme Musims are bad but so are the Anglicans and Catholics when you delve into their respective closets and look at the acts of pure hedonism and sadism that they have committed.... It makes me sick to the core especially the self effacing self righteous attitude of some of these people... And hard core Methodists are the worst of the lot, do you know that there is an enclave of them in the ACT and they are opposed to anything not within their dogma, even to the busness where they tried to have the local nude swimming hole de gazzetted, in their submission they declared "They are all running around naked down there, they have no clothes on they could be copulating or anything" SO WHAT??? Why can't all these religious zealots live and let live, why are all Christians the sworn enemy of Muslim extremists? Why are most Christians opposed to nudity? Why can't they handle risque humour? Why do they say that their bible is the "only" way to go?

It's a shame we can't live in a utopian society where everyone looks out for their mate and everyone helps their neighbour, like Australia used to be not so long ago. I think maybe a tough line has to be drawn in the sand, irrespective of ones beliefs I think one should be given time to assimilate then MADE to become and Australian citizen or leave....

Those trying to subvert the Aussie way should also be deported, we don't need religious leaders trying to convert us one way or the other.

G'day Basil,

Couldn't agree more.

Can't think of any war that did or does not have some form of differing religious beliefs and you will get wowsers in every society.  In my book there is nothing worse than an religious zealot.

The battle of Culloden April 1746 the final defeat of the Jacobites whose cause was to restore the House of Stuart to the British throne.  Maybe you can tell us what was so important about this final battle to be fought on British soil.

Regards
John

I'll be in that just as long as I can have the position of Contemplative Abbot.

( a.k.a. The Deep Friar, or Chip Monk. )
