makin money along the way

Eventually when It comes time for me to be handed the keys to our motor home
I'd like to solo around australia on my own and at some stage maybe get some part time work here and there,
I love music and good with computers so was kind of thinking maybe doing some dj party type of thing, I'm currently doing a weekly radio show on our local comunity fm station, 60's to now kind of music with a mate of mine who alternate from week to week.

I'm also kind of thinking about as we start to do our trips , to dable in a bit of writing of our experiences , any one written a book  or too?

maybe something with photography ?
I dont know, just thinking out loud,

any thoughts ? what have you done?

Well Milo, you sure do a lot of thinking all at once.
Firstly, you'll probably have to make a sort of travel "plan", but keep it flexible. If you just want to subsidise your fuel fund and don't depend on the income you'd probably get gigs in little country pubs along the way. Most big town pubs have entertainment planned.
The little country pubs where people just pass through or the boys and girls come in from the "farm", are always looking for some sort of entertainment. A DJ with good, lively dance music is a winner in most places. It's too far and too expensive to bring bands or entertainers out from the "smoke". Even some caravan parks put on entertainment during the peak season.
If you want to write about your adventures and experiences, and get paid for it, you could set up a deal with one or more of the travel/caravan mags and web sites so they'll take your work whenever you submit, or make a regular feature of your work. The scheduled commitment may put pressure on you when you won't really want pressure in the nomadic lifestyle. You will need a digital camera of more than 8 megapixels, and a laptop with mobile wireless broadband or access to wireless internet to send your work to your customers. If you freelance, you may have to submit to various markets and expect rejection sometimes.(often)
Writing the book is easy. Getting published is a whole new challenging industry. If you want to publish with photographs it's a very expensive business but if you find the right agent to find the right publisher you'll be on every coffee table in the country. To self-publish this type of book is much harder because you then have to do the marketing and pay for the printing and binding.
I'm currently sending submissions to agents to find a publisher for my books. I have been a freelance journo/writer for more than 20 yrs. Once they get to know your work you're in.
I do spasmodic freelance work for an internet mag Groovy Grandmas, and she pays.
So there are opportunities to make a buck on the road. Hairdressing is always a winner if you want to diversify. Only joking. Cheers Chris
