g'day Pete, welcome to the forum, all depends on the level of comfort that you are after but the falcon (depending on model) would handle the 20 footer (depending on internal fitout) with ease providing it is within legal towing regulations

hell of a lot of people live in smaller vans and quite a few live in bigger, it's up to you

if you were to live in it would you require a shower and toot??

when you see the van then you will know if it is for you or not

I would choose australia for long term, it's horribly expensive to export the van out of N.Z. after you have seen it all (about an hour and a half including the north island) you could tour australia forever more and not see it all

Hey Dave thats a bit tough NZ may be smaller than OZ (approx 32 times) but it packs quite a punch for its size, there are a lot of things to see that Australia can not offer and you wont have to worry about crocs or snakes or spiders either.NZ has a bigger land area than England ,Scotland and Wales put together

We are towing 17ft van with BA Falcon no problems, but I don,t think I would like to go too much bigger Tare weight 1145kg Tow Ball weight 135Kg unloaded.
I filled the gas bottle the other day and it definatly affected the Dinamics.

Welcome to the forums MM

My suggestion to you would be to hire a van of the length you would like, first. Tow it around for a weekend and see how your car handles the load. That will give you an idea of the length and probably also a clearer idea of the fit-out you want and what suits you best.

You may have to hire a couple of different ones but it will be a darn site cheaper and less frustrating than to buy a mistake.

All the best with whatever you do. Enjoy the travel!

in the end it is of course your choice where you settle, all I was trying to get across was that you would be restricted in new zealand once you see it all, whether that takes 12 months or 2 years it doesnt matter it will still take a lot of money to get your setup over here

whereas in aust. you could wander for years (as I have done) and not see it all, dont want to be here then dont be here, up to you

as for water, well, all depends on where you go, we have wandered nearly all the deserts and been around over under and through more times than I can remember and I have had no problem getting water

the decision is yours

ah!! now if you could afford to do that then you would have the best of both worlds, I just thought the cost of transporting the van and car over here would have been very prohibitive

I dont know what the cost would be but, high I would guess, all the best in whatever you decide and keep us up to date
